Seeing the food thread on Toledo made me go back to a question I always have when I make the trip to Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend. Why is it so hard for either of these places to have a quality gas station and more restaurants. There's plenty of business and the land to build. So why hasn't someone made the investment and built closer to the lake?

As far as Toledo Bend..have you ever been to Toledo Town? What more would you want? Tackle shop, large amount of gas pumps, pretty good bkfst and lunch..Ain't gonna be any Bucees there, I'll give you that.
If you look around a little, you'll find plenty of small gas stations that sell ethanol free gas..
I guess it depends on what part of the lake(s) that you fish and launch out of.

Because about 85% of the traffic dies down August through February.

That's one area of a 185,000 acre lake. There's much more areas around the lake that can be utilized better.

Exactly most fisherman stay in the mid lake area but if you head down to the Hemphill area around Housen they have some decent places to eat. It’s is just a wide spread area that is busy for maybe five months out the year. After that it’s hit and miss.

Sam Rayburn has a lot more to offer. Most fisherman stay in the Jasper area which is a decent size town that has people all year long. You have a few pretty good places to eat but the town stays pretty busy which helps them survive the non fishing season.

Take it for what it's worth but Zwolle seems like it's grown a little since the first time I fished there about 15 years ago... still not a prime area by any means but it's improved.
Toledo town area is ok but you would think a couple of decent chain restaurants would do ok there.... Mickey D's or something.

Next trip I'll probably bring my own food and cook at night instead of eating out so much... we were there on a Monday night this year and couldn't find crawfish anywhere. drove all the way to Many to eat at Bayou CRAWFISH and they didn't have crawfish on Monday night.

but that's beside the point.... gas stations were decent and Hemphill seems like a nice little town.
