Spec and other goose calls

This is a spin off from the duck call thread.
I noticed a bunch of you guys like the Chien Caille spec call. What other calls are you using for specs or other geese for that matter.
I've been using the shaved reed Primos call for Snow's, primarily because I've had it for quite awhile, and it was cheap at the time.

I cant blow a spec call worth a damn.
I dont get it, I think you have to have some musical talent to make a spec call really talk. I have none.
I have a Haydels that I can ALMOST call. But for the most part I keep it in my pocket.

no other sounds like it.... Mervis hand tunes these things, you can't beat it. It is hard to blow, but once you learn its unbeatable. Plus, if you can make it out to his place he will teach you and tune it to your calling..

Chien Caille spec call or Pyo(pie-o). They are family members but don't get along at all...quick story, sitting drinking a couple beers listing to Pyo blow the speck call, a buddy asked Pyo "what you do when they get close?" his reply...I Shoot

A lot of people have started manufacturing a better speck call. However Chein Caillie is still the standard by which all speck calls are made.
When I was a kid a freind of mine was taught by Mr. Mervis, and he taught me how to blow and make speck calls. Now I use my own. Most of them are based on the PS OLT coyote call just retuned or replaced with a thicker reed. However I also have gotten into turning calls and have made some nice hand made ones out of cocabola (sp?)

My personal opinion on the Chein Caille is that they were a lot better years ago.....Back he was actually using plastic from Ace combs to make the reeds. Now he uses plastic stock and I don't believe that stock is as hard as the plastic from the combs. The calls I have heard with the newer reeds are not quite as high pitched. Yes, they are much easier to blow, but they don't have the high piercing tone that the old ones had. I still have one of the old style. I had two but the reed cracked on one and had to get it replaced. I was disappointed with the new one. I actually thought about bringing him a comb and asking him to make a reed out of it.

I have about 50 old ACE combs in my workshop for just that reason.

ive used a chien caille (spotted dog) for several years, but i just got my hands on a RedBone last year and am starting to get the hang of it...if your just beginning there is nothing better than the chien caille, but if you are looking for something more challenging and an all around more versatile call then i have never heard anything better than a RedBone in the right hands

$200 for a speck call? I can think of a lot of other I'd rather spend my money on.

Holy crap! Just followed the loink to the Chien Caille website. Didn't even know they had one....50 bucks now for one of his calls! I bought mine for 15 "back in the day". Course, back then he would not send you one, and you had do some good lying to even buy one for someone else because he'd always say you could not leave his house before he taught you how to use it.

Don't have a chien, have a couple of spec calls from haydels, can't call worth a shite. Have a Faulks snow/blue, so so with it. Don't really need goose calls much, only kill a few a year. But would like to learn. Also the canadian dbl. cluck is interesting.

I'd love to be able to get my hands on a chein caille, but I'll have to settle for my Sean Mann White Front. Easy to use and pretty versatile.
