Well I have three little nephews that are always playing in the yard and I can't tell the difference between non-venomous or not. I know it's not the best idea, it's just my opinion on snakes.
You just stick to your idea then. Sounds like a solid plan.

I hope the one time you do run across a venomous snake, he gets you before you get him.
Good natured and even "rough" teaching of a lesson is fine, but, IMO, if you really feel that way, you've got a real problem.

Come on guys save all the personal attacks for the OT Lounge board. Lets try and keep it like "Good 'ol Folk" in here. Nothing turns me off than the OT Lounge board and people spending 3-4 pages about nothing! Just seeing who has the biggest penis on the internet!

What if OP has chickens? Nothing worse than one of those damn things eating your eggs and scaring the crap out of you when you open the coop.
I'm not the harbinger of snake death, but if I had chickens and I saw a chicken snake, he gone.

You could take 2 minutes and educate yourself.
Or you can just kill the one you find in your yard every 10 yrs.

I will never understand why someone who hangs out on an outdoor board would not want to educate themselves about all things outdoors. In my mind, the true outdoorsman respects all things outdoors, protects all things outdoors.

It's just a damn chicken snake. Growing up in the country you killed everyone you saw and I still do. Those and poisonous ones are all I will kill. I have seen too many in birds nest or a rabbit hole eating baby rabbits to let them go.

Here you go, OP. Link to poster so you can learn to ID the few venomous snakes in LA.
snakes of SE US
You're very unlikely to see many other than cottonmouth, copperhead and Canebrake/Timber Rattler. I've been hiking now for most of my life and just saw my first coral snake in the wild a couple of weeks ago. Once you learn to ID the bad ones, you can allow the beneficial ones to protect your property from rodents.

I grew up in the country and I never killed every one of anything I saw.
I can understand protecting your home from poisonous animals, but these creatures were created by God. Sometimes you have to look a little deeper for the beauty and reason in God's creation, but it's there.
If they aren't going to do me any harm, of I'm not going to harvest them for food, then I give them their space to live.
