If she is going to put the time in on the range and learn how to clear jams, etc., then look at a semi auto.
If she will not do that, and is just going to put it in her purse, car, etc., a revolver is best. It doesn't fail, you pull the trigger, it goes pew, very simple and reliable.

I’ve also seen a video from lucky gunner where he discusses ballistics and interviews the ballistics guys who work for Federal. Their conclusion is that people stress too much about handgun ballistics and wound channels when in reality, the ballistics between handgun calibers are not different enough to matter that much compared to shot placement. Because a 44 mag is not significantly enough bigger or faster moving than a .380 to matter that much. With either caliber, a bodily organ has to be hit directly by the bullet to be damaged (only rifle bullets are fast enough to cause shock damage to tissue that has not been directly hit). The human body is elastic and will spring back and close the temporary wound channel caused by any handgun (but not rifle). So moral of the story, shot placement is everything which means shoot the caliber that is most comfortable for you and don’t even worry about “stopping power” (although I don’t recall if their conclusion accounts for mouse guns).

Uh...I do not know where you got that from. I saw a guy shot with a 45acp using ball ammo from 8yds and it blew parts of his lungs thru the back of the couch he was sitting in.

Like I said, I got that from a Lucky Gunner video in which he interviewed the guys at Federal who make a living by designing and testing bullets. I don’t have the expertise to disagree or not. It makes sense on some level but at the same time it’s hard to believe a .45 isn’t going to cause massively more damage than a .380 if hit in the same exact spot.
Basically, they said only rifle rounds move fast enough to cause massive tissue damage and the size/speed differences between handgun rounds aren’t different enough to matter much, at least compared to shot placement.
