My shishito pepper plant is full bore. It’s producing by the bushel.

My jalapeño plant, on the other hand, is a bit lethargic. Probably only 1/4 blooms makes it to pepper.

I’ve been careful not to overwater and moved the plant to a spot where it gets only 6-9 hours of direct sunlight rather than 12+. Any ideas as to why it’s struggling? I’ve considered getting a bigger pot to allow it space to grow.

Do you fertilize it regularly? Also, some peppers just drop blooms when temps rise over 95 degrees. I'd bet that once it cools off a bit in October, that jalapeno will produce more than you can handle.

My best guess would be that its just too warm for the booms to set. Stay patient, and you shall be rewarded.

I’m in the same boat as you but I’m not moving the plants. Dang bell peppers are taking a beating right now as well.

Check the label on the specific type you're using. If it's heavy on the nitrogen it can delay fruit set and encourage foliage growth instead. A higher ratio of phosphorus and potassium will increase blossom production. Also consider adding epsom salt and some form of calcium. Thicker walled peppers need a lot of magnesium and calcium versus thinner hot peppers.

Just some things to consider, could very well just be the heat, but these are easy steps to take and see.

I pulled about a dozen off my Mucho nacho jalapeno plant last night.I have probably 3-4 smaller, and it is still flowering. With this heat I am watering almost daily, but not too much just enough to dampen the soil. This is off of one plant, and it is potted.

I’m watering twice daily and my plant is in a small pot.

Think that could be the issue?

Is it smaller than a 2 gallon pot? If so, the plant could be stunted.

The pot is much smaller than two gallons.

I’m guessing I should upgrade and get larger pots?

That could be causing several issues, and they tend to snowball. Good chance the plant is nutrient deficient if you’re having to water twice a day, to go along with sporadic access to water and not enough leg room.

Not sure of my size pot, but I would say it is 18" wide, and 20-24"" or so tall. So yes I think it will help.

Many peppers will not set in this heat. Be patient and get a bigger pot.

Pinch your blooms off if they won’t set. That will help encourage more root and stalk growth. Late Summer let those blooms go and you’ll have too many peppers.

Actually pinch off the blooms or cut them off?

I put my jalapeño and shishito in much larger pots. I also picked up a Marconi pepper that I planted too.

How much do y’all water your pepper plants and how frequently?

Thanks y’all.

There’s no one size fits all for watering. You want to keep the soil moist but not soaked. In a container that drains well, that should be every other day or so in this heat, but that will depend on how big the container is. More and deeper dirt will hold moisture longer.
