Brothers of the OB, I am looking at side scan sonar models. I primarily fish sacaulait. Do they help enough to add to my setup? Any experiences or recommendations? I current have a Lowrance HDS5 GPS and a Striker down scan unit. Thanks.

If you learn how to read them, yes. You can scan a flat for brushpiles a lot better looking out 20 or so feet.

I agree with Janky. If you learn how to use side scan, it's a great tool for finding brush piles, creek channels and lay downs. I use mine every trip out. I use a humminbird. I have used both Lowrance and Humminbird and the Humminbird seems more user friendly to me.

BPS has the Garmin 74sv for 449 and 94sv for 599 until March 4th. Both come loaded with blue charts for coastal water and a LakeVu map card for inland lakes. I have a 73sv and bought a 74sv to go with it this year. I like mine a lot and it's about the best price for a 7" or 9" all in one unit. Considering you have Lowrance and Striker now, I think Garmin makes a kit to share waypoints with other brands but not 100% on that. May need to do some research on that to be sure.

Check out the Elite 7 TI. Has side imaging, downscan, and CHIRP sonar and doesn't cost near what the HDS or Carbons do. They're essentially the HDS Gen 2 touches with software upgrades.

Do those have the track back so you can mark the brush pile you see after you pass them? I've got the HDI elite 5 and it's good for down, but have been thinking about a side scan model also.

Lowrance HDS or Carbon you can back track on your history and mark anything.

It makes finding those secret spots of sunken trees easy a fishing guide took me on one time for White Perch fishing. I just have to remember the area they are in and I can find them without much effort.

Your exactly the kind of person a guide HATES taking out. They do all the work planting brush, using their gear and their equipment and then a jerk like you hires them and fishes their spots after the trip.

How about , instead of being a lazy arse, planting your OWN brushpiles on your OWN spots that YOU found using your money and equipment. You might actually find some satisfaction in it instead of barging in on someone else's hard work and f-ing up the way they make $$ to feed their family..

Calm down snowflake. When I called the guide I made it clear that I have never fished the lake before and I wanted him to show me some spots. He said no problem. I did not GPS mark any spot but I have a good memory. That was the point of the trip. He showed me the entire lake and we fished.

He showed me one spot that was not even his. He said another guy fishes this spot every white perch tournament and when he leaves other boats rush into there but they can not find the exact spot but he can. He is squinting his eyes as he is looking across the lake and back to his right and left trying to line everything up. I could not help but laugh. All I have to do is remember the cove’s location and I can find the spot with sidescan very easily and I have. I catch some nice fish there almost every time. But I have spent days searching for other spots and I find them and mark them. I did not sink those trees but I have no problem fishing those spots either.

It's not that hard of work to sink brush piles, arse klown.

Knowing where to sink them is the key.

Thanks to all. I spoke to a rep at Bass Pro. He suggested that I get a Lowrance Hook 2 7x triple shot since I already have a Nav device. Only problem is the HS5 is so big I do not know if I can put a second unit on my console. May get a new unit with everything and get rid of the HS5 and the old down scan unit.

LOL It's all good if you were up front with the guide. My bad, I read it as a different scenario
