Yeah those look pretty sweet. How long have you been into making your own? Do you put them to use or is it more for display purposes?

I’m been making them on and off for 2 years. I do fish with them. They hold up well. This new batch has a new rattle system concept that sound like one knockers. Have a few friends that are going to try a few out. If taken care of they can last way longer than store bought baits. Just replace the hooks occasionally

Nice work. Any pics of how you made them in various steps of the process?

Looks great. Do you airbrush them?
On a side note, I think you’re a hobbit

How are the hook eyes attached to the wood? Very cool.

I’m going to make a video and post on YouTube about the process of making different baits. Here’s a quick rundown.
Cut a small piece of desired wood
Grind it down on a lathe
I cut the bait to insert a glass bead and epoxy it back together. That’s a long process too long to type.
Back on the lathe and grind to right specifications.
Cut out my eyes, drill holes for my screw eyes
Dip in polyurethane and dry.
Prime with paint and then airbrush with water based acrylics
Then clear coat the bait with a polyacrylic
Then apply an epoxy on the bait to cure. I usually do 2-3 coats
Apply split rings and hooks and test them.

So I make my own hook eyes. These are SS screw ins. I apply 5 min epoxy in each eye. They hold up well Some guys cut the bait in half and bend a wire the the length of the bait and epoxy the bait back together and sand down.

What kind of fishing are you gonna be doing with these? I have wanted to get into a hobby like this. If you need someone to try them on frshewater TVA lakes like Pickwick lemme know. I think I could catch a hog on one. What kind of action do theby make in the water? Walk the dog or jerkbait type situation

These are for saltwater, but can be used in fresh. I’m making a few poppers next. The action on these with tupelo is walking the dog like a spook. The ones I carved using western red cedar dig down more like badonkadonks

Nice work. You should consider experimenting with adding weight in certain locations to change walking action, and of course do a plopper version.

How did you get into that? Any advice? Basic tools needed?
Looks cool by the way!

I love to fish topwater and I notice the baits you buy in the store don't hold up well. Paint chips off easy, most of the factory hooks on baits suck and I just felt if I put the time in I could make a better bait.
The basic tools I would recommend is a good carving knife, lots of 220, 120, 80 grit sandpaper, exacto knife, 18g SS wire, chisel, polyurethane, spray paint cans, and epoxy. Start there and see what you can come up with. Then if you still like it start to upgrade your tools. I started off with a cheap $60 airbrush gun. Now I have a $170 gun. Just depends on what you want to do. It is a fun hobby. You'll make a ton of mistakes, some of the mistakes turn into cool things, but you usually learn from them.
