My 2 Daiwa Coastal 150's are starting to give me issues. Out of the box they were great reels.

What sort of issues? I love that reel and if I need to do preventative maintenance I’ll be happy to.

I have 2. I sent one back to Daiwa because of a scratchy noise during retrieve. They replaced that one. The other one started to get noisy after a while also. It had corrosion inside even though I rinsed and maintained them. Had them cleaned at LC Tackle and they seem to be ok. I'm slowly switching everything over to Shimano.

Go figure; I had nothing but Shimano and my last 4 purchases have been Daiwa. 2 spinning, 2 baitcasters. Maybe the grass is always greener.

I've been leaning Daiwa too but the lines are much more blurred between reel brands than 10-15 yrs ago

This. Doyo has delivered some really nice stuff in that $100-$200 range in the last few years.

I still like to splurge on the premium stuff every now and then but the mid market has done nothing but get better over the years.

No argument here, but it’s also why I don’t own one. They’re tanks.

Looks like a ci4 with a little lighter spool? I really like my ci4; first thing I did was replace a few bushings with bearings. It’s not quite as smooth as a Japanese Luvias but it’s a little lighter; they’re my main 2 inshore spinning reels.

Holding a ci4+ and vanford of the same size at the safe time, I find the vanford noticably lighter

6.7 oz vs 6.4 oz for a 2500 according to Shimano. It gets harder and harder to shave weight the lighter you go but that would probably be noticeable. I’m not in the market for another 2500 right now but it’ll definitely be in the mix next time I am. I didn’t buy the Luvias because I didn’t like the Stradic Ci4, I was just willing to try Daiwa after buying a BG for a loaner. That BG is the best value reel I’ve ever fished.

As an aside, I don’t know if this is a supply chain issue or not, but the JDM Luvias is currently made in China, not Japan. Just a couple of years ago they were made in Japan, and as much as I like it I wouldn’t be interested in a reel that expensive from China.

I'm using a 2500 and 3000 Penn conflict 2 atm for my go to spinning reels. Very good reels and I got both of them for $100 off (like new) used. I have some battle 2s for my backups and loaners. When my conflict 2s wear out I'm gonna buy some vanfords. But that's not gonna be anytime soon since I use my DC reels 99% of the time.

Also, if it's just a supply chain issue I would assume that even though they are using china factories then they would most likely be implementing the same QC requirements. Whereas if they sent it to China for cost cutting you can bet your arse the QC going down.
