I bought my son a 20ga for Christmas and want to bring him squirrel hunting in Sherburne. But I don’t want to walk up on any deer hunters and spoil their hunt. Safety reasons too, since it’s open rifle at the moment. If I stick to the small game emphasis area along the river, should we be okay? Do people deer hunt that area? And if they do, I’m okay to walk through there hunting squirrels since it’s designated for that purpose right?

I’ve hunted sherburne my whole life, squirrel hunters are part of the game. Go where ever you want. You have just as much rights to hunt that land as anyone else. I would suggest wearing at least an orange hat. Check the regs for yourself, but I’m almost positive squirrel and duck hunters aren’t required to wear orange, but I definitely still would. Especially since your boy is with you.

Take your boy squirrel hunting. Make sure you both have plenty of orange (hat/vest minimum). I would hold off going at first light and within a couple hours of dark but you have just as much right to use the WMA as others do. You are more likely to get deer moving during the day then you are to spook a deer that was already moving in there direction.

Only duck hunters are exempt. Small game hunters have to wear an orange vest and hat whenever primitive or general rifle season is open on a WMA

Thanks for correcting me, I’ve never squirrel hunted during an open firearm season so I couldn’t remember if squirrel hunters were also exempt.

Where are you located?
I would look for a bow only or non rifle days on a WMA just for the safety factor.

Amen. Squirrel hunters may have just as much right to Sherburne as the deer hunters, but I personally wouldn't go slipping through the woods and swamps there during rifle season!
