I currently have a frankenstein spinner combo with 12lb mono and a 7' pole. I use a carolina rig with circle hook and steel leader.

I catch plenty of smaller reds/hardheads/trout but looking for something to use bigger baits for bigger fish. Id also like to do a little surf fishing along the Cameron area coast.

I know the OB can get me set up!

TIA

Do you mean legit surf fishing where you cast baits out long distances and set the rod in a rodholder or are you talking about wade surf fishing.

True surf rods will usually be 9-12' and optimized for long casts.

Wife shot down the idea of buying a drone to fly the bait way out.

Mainly talking about wading.

My primary fishing is 90% from the bank and 10% in the surf.

Medium heavy for sure if you are targeting just redfish. For all purpose I would stick to straight medium rod.

I tend to stay on the smaller size when it comes to reels. They are lighter and cast better. But again if you are strictly targeting redfish, then a 400 series would be best.

Get the Gulf Shores special then. 8' heavy rod with a decent reel

If surf fishing, I would recommend:
Shimano sagauro 9 ft rod
Shimano Nexave or Sedona 4000 size reel
40 lb Sufix 832 braid

You could get all that from academy for less than $150 total

Depending on how much OP wants to spend it may be worthwhile looking to sealed drag system considering the style of fishing he will be doing.

If i only had one piece of advice to give, it would be to get a Shimano or Daiwa spinning reel. Both brands are excellent and even their lower end models perform flawlessly in my experience. I like my Nexaves ($40) every bit as much as my Stradic ($200). I just bought 2 sedonas and those feel like $200 reels. You really can go cheap and get great equipment

After browsing all this info and spending way too much time on the internet today, I think I'm gonna go this route. I mainly go fishing just to get out of the house. It's becoming an addiction though

That’s why i say go cheap. I like my Nexaves just as much as my Stradic and Daiwa Kage and they have held up to my abuse.

You can have a lot of fun catching 20+ lb catfish from the banks of the MS if you find the right place, and the surf setup I recommended is awesome for that.
