Scope mounts for my new plinker

I just bought a Marlin 60 about 2 weeks ago, and have never used a red dot before. Do red dots mostly just fit weaver or will they fit on the dovetail? Or am I a moron?
PS went with the 60 over the 10/22 because I love my Marlin 336 so much I felt like supporting the brand.

My 60 is a fantastic gun. Parents bought it for me when I was about 10 and has been the most reliable gun I've owned. I still plink over 100 yards with open sites. I would like to put a scope on it for distance, but there is a certain fun in long shots with open sights.

no knowledge on red dots here
just saw you just bought a new 60, just an fyi, if you have any problems with failure to extracts/stovepiping try using decent ammo instead of thunderbolts etc.
if that doesn't help check the extractor wire like mentioned in this thread
i would think that a brand new marlin like mine would have had it in the right spot but it wasn't, i had to adjust it a tad, now it's not having any jams

Haven't had any problems with it yet, but I read online in a couple places to avoid Remington Thunderbolts, so maybe that's why....

Shifty,
If possible, I'd a Weaver base instead of a dovetail base. For rings, nowadays I only use Burris Signature Z-Rings. The Signature series uses plastic inserts inside the rings, avoiding the need to lap the inside of the rings. Z-rings attach to a Weaver base. If the Signature rings are too expensive, then I'd look at the regular Burris Z-Rings.

Remington Rimfire ammo is dirty.

Shifty,
If your gun is drilled and tapped to accept a scope base, you can get something like this:
LINK Having said that, after looking at some pics on the 'net, it appears as if your gun may have only the dovetailed grooves and is not tapped and drilled and tapped.
The adaptor in your picture will work. Wasn't expecting it to be that expensive.
Of course, you can just skip the adaptor entirely and use scope rings that fit the dovetailed grooves. These are called "tip off rings". These are Weaver.
LINK
Using an adaptor should be more stable than just "tip off rings", but the latter is certainly cheaper.
Here's some more info.

Thanks, TOTH and Headslash, lots of interesting stuff to read there. I see I have options.
