I planted a satsuma back in April. Its growing like crazy, but some of the new growth has thorns and some does not. My dad said to cut the thorny branches off, but my coworker says to leave them. What do you guys/gals think I should do?

It's called a sucker and it will basically suck the nutrients from the rest of the tree anD wont produce jack shite. Cut that beast off and enjoy your healthy satsumas.

Does the portion of the tree with thorns sprout from near the base? The bottom of the trunk is normally the rootstock. Any limbs which branch from there should be taken off as soon as you notice them. If not, they will tend to grow much more vigorously than the fruit portion of the tree.

These limbs will rob the fruiting portion of the tree of energy. If 80% of your tree is the rootstock, there's not much energy left for your Satsuma portion to blossom.

Yea, I planted my trees in April as well. Noticed a couple thorny branches a couple months later and cut them off
