Anyone here have experience building their own fishing rods?

I'm looking to buy a few new rods, but considering building my own.

The choices are endless, but it does not seem to be very difficult process.

The Mudhole seems to have a good starter kit.
Beyond the starter kit, any advice on good blanks, reel seats, guides, website for supplies?

Like you said, your options are endless.

What are you looking to build?
Most bigger manufacturers sell their blanks.

I haven't built one in a few years but Fuji guides are the best.
also, their reel seat is simple and pretty bullet proof.

A small rod drying motor will be your friend.
A manual rod wrapping machine is not necessary but makes things a whole lot easier on you.

Also, learn how to find the spine of the rod.

I mainly sight fish reds, but do still bass fish. There was a time when I bass fished hard, but I take it way less serious now.

When sight fishing I really need mostly an all purpose rod. There are times in the day I pitch to fish and times in the day I'm making long accurate casts.

Mudhole has a starter kit for around $200 that I'm really interested in. Includes the motor, stand, wrapping tools, epoxy, and all the pieces to make your first rod.

Where I go from there for the next few rods is what I'm wondering. Looking for advice like you gave about the Fuji guides and rod seats.

Well, I started out wanting to do the same as you.

That quickly turned into build around 50 or more rods. mostly for friends and a several for me.

A couple of things,

there are plenty of formulas out there on where to put your guides. I picked the number and then would line them up with the rod bent.

There are so many rods out there now. Not sure what would be best for what you're asking but I'd guess a 7ft medium to medium-fast action.

I just ordered a Turnkey kit from Mudhole to build an ultralight rod.

I'm looking forward to getting started.
