Hey OB. So we rescued this little girl Maltese/Schnauzer (Mauser?) And have a question.

She's two years old. Female. Spayed. Doesn't bark (I haven't heard one yet). Stays in kennel all night. Sits on command. Pretty jam up so far...

Except, I noticed sometimes she gets very protective of a toy. Doesn't growl but sometimes nips at your hand if you go to get it. She has so many good qualities I'd like to work with her on this. Any tips?

Thanks

New question:
Dogs been awesome. Super happy. Super quiet and affectionate. Until today. My 4 year old went to hug her as she was half asleep on the couch and she popped up and bit him pretty good on the arm. Left marks. Wife smacked her and put her up. Once she bit she immediately let go and cowared down when my boy let out a Yelp. He's ok and no blood but it could have been his face. She's about 18lbs and isn't big. She worth keeping and is fixable or no?

Other than this she's been pretty much the best dog. Im not attached but the kids are so I thought I'd ask advice before we send her back to the pound or find someone older or with bigger kids who wants her. My kids are 4 6 and 8. They are not all in her face and are really calm. It surprised me.

Strike her when it happens on top of the head. Have to establish yourself as pack leader and set boundaries for acceptable behavior.

What Larry said. Our rescue mutt did that when we’d wake her up sometimes. Probably a reflex reaction from her year of life on the mean streets. Quick, corrective action fixed it.

Thanks.

I did that myself and she quit doing it to me. But the kids.. I told them they need to be assertive. Glad to know I'm doing it right. Thanks again

Smack the shite out of her. Your dog needs to know not to bite you. That's not something to be tolerated....ever.

My dog gets scared when I yell, but IDGAF, because he listens.

Eta: If it snaps at your kids, smack the shite out of her harder and let her know those are your kids, and they are not to be touched

My little mutt that just got killed by coyotes was kind of nippy when I first got her. I popped her a few good times and she quit. She never bit any of my nieces and nephews who played with her daily but my dads legs always had band aids all over them from her getting after him. He antagonized her a lot though
