Removing a gun stock

I am changing the stock on an old Remington 742 rifle for a friend. Putting a youth stock on it. Problem is the screw inside the stock won't budge. I guess it's been there for 35 years. Any ideas on how to break it lose? It's a flat head screw.

Can you get some pb blaster to where the threads start?
Or maybe warm it somehow, leave it in the sun etc...

Do you have a vise and an impact wrench? Do you care if the existing stock gets messed up?

I'm trying to preserve the original stock. I bought a new one and cut it down to youth sized.
Can see the threads. The top of the screw is about 3-4 inches into the stock. I thought about some runt penetrating spray. Heating it might work but it would b3 heating the wood not the screw so it probably won't do anything.

You need a perfectly fit screwdriver, perhaps put it in a drill press and turn by hand to break free.

Could you get a socket with a flat head blade on it to get more leverage? I've got a 16 inch ratchet that I have to use sometimes getting bolts loose on cars. Might be a way to get the screw to break loose without too much force and messing up the stock.

You might drop the trigger group, the screw might be threaded all the way through to the rear of the receiver, I can't remember if it is or not. (To get oil to the threads)

That screw may have jammed up....you know, like that gun always does.
Just kidding

Insert screwdriver, hit the end of the screwdriver very hard with the hammer and that may break it free. If that doesn’t work, use PB blaster or brake cleaner.

First, if you try to use any kind of flathead screwdriver that doesn't have a ground tip you are only going to greatly increase the chances of camming out the screw head. Second, you might have to get creative to get the screw loose without damaging the stock. Personally I'd put the stock in a large, well padded carpenter's bench vise and try a manual impact driver.

Harbor Freight Impact Screwdriver
this work well with blue loctite bolts on some of the older gear boxes our shop works on. Should be able to break it free if you have a solid vice to put the gun in.
