Red-headed woodpeckers

I live in a fairly wooded area outside the city limits. In fact, most of the lots back up to a large servitude area of woods. There’s lots of wildlife in this area, and plenty of different types of birds, But for some reason this year, I have noticed a large amount of red-headed woodpeckers. I mean more than the usual amount. We have plenty of Cardinals, Pine wobblers, Mockingbirds, Carolina Wrens, a decent amount of hummingbirds, doves, Pileated woodpeckers, and more on the increase, Whistler ducks…. But again, the most prominent bird in our neighborhood right now is the redheaded woodpecker. There’s at least 8 to 10 of them in the two or three adjoining properties all day long. There’s a pretty good mix of standing dead pine trees left over from hurricane Ida, so maybe they’re nesting in the area. At least that’s the only reason I could come up with. Otherwise, seems like they’re everywhere.

ginger
And they're real delicate despite having quite a hard head.

if you have dead trees you have woodpeckers. I have both
Put out some suet feeders and you’ll get them to come in close

This reminded me of the thread about those pileated (spelling may be wrong) ones people argue about. Always loved reading that and seeing fb groups go into a spiral over them.
Almost as fun as the bigfoot groups.

I have some Pileated ones and some other types. Have seen some of the smaller types pull baby birds of other species out of nests and houses and toss them on the ground.
Lowe's in my area now sell the birdhouses with an extra block of wood to put around the opening so the woodpeckers can't reach the bottom of the houses and pull the little birds out.
Have also seen crows mess with other nests.

My 2nd cousin's best friend's yard man's brother has a trail cam pic of a Black Panther with an Ivory-Billed woodpecker riding on his back.

Yes that's it! I'm not a bird expert. Just fascinated by weird stuff. And the the stories of the search for the ivory bill were fun to read.
