I will be taking my sons to Yellowstone this summer and will be walking some of the trails there. Here are some of the best trails in Yellowstone. It will be relatively warm so insulation isn’t a concern but I’d like something lightweight that would be sturdier and give more support than my New Balances.

My two cents:

La Sportiva

The La Sportiva are my next pair of hybrid shoes. I like the vibram sole with heel.

I don't like the Merrill Chameleons because the soles are too flexible for what I like.

I had been using Lowa Baffin as my go to boot. Although, they are too heavy for what I want to clomp around in these days. And are likely more than you want to wear for what you are doing.

Ultimately, If I were you: I would try to go with something light with a stiff sole.

I am a big fan of Salomon, they have some very nice hikers that are extremely comfortable and able to be worn on a daily basis. Check out their XA Forces Mid, you can get it in goretex as well if you want.

If you want to go with a true hiking boot then I would recommend Lowa, cannot go wrong with them.

ETA: Don't let the summer fool you in Yellowstone. I got snowed in during June and could only get out and back to Bozeman to catch my plane by following a plow truck. Be careful with weather if you are going to be out in the mountains.

What New Balances do you have? The minimus? I have those and wear them most of the time. In Yellowstone, trails are pretty worn and not as rocky as some places you may encounter that would make me not wear them. Depending on the terrain, I wear either those, La Sportiva Wildcats, or Lems Boulder Boot. I highly recommend all three.

I have a new pair of NB808s. I agree with what you are saying about the worn paths but it looks like we might be walking through some meadows, stream beds, etc. I guess that I want to keep using this pair of trail shoes for local use, too.

Thanks to the other posters for the suggestions - I really respect the opinion of the folks on the OB.

Salomon XA pro 3D

Shoes not boots. They have a built up toe to prevent jamming toes into rocks and the rock plate in the sole to give you a sturdy sole and arch protection from the uneven rocks.

Wear them on through hikes in the Sierras. Great shoe.

But unless you are going out and doing serious hiking, regular cross trainers or running shoes would be fine.

You might be overthinking it a little. Those 808’s should be fine. What are you mainly concerned about?

The main thing is how thin the fabric is on the top of the shoe between the laces and the toe. Overall, they seem so light and built for speed. I know that it’s the norm for good athletic shoes so I’m not faulting the NBs.

Another part is me just wanting to get some new outdoor gear...like getting a sixth fishing rod even though at least 2 of the ones you own will do the job just as well. And I also think that getting these for the boys will get them a little more excited. Wait till I tell them about buying bear spray!

What ever you chose, put bells on them. And talk a good bit as you hike. Griz is all over that country.
