Archery on public land in most cases. North Texas and somewhat hill country. Open to all suggestion. Also considering hang-on and saddle, but i am new to this so should likely take it slow.

Climbing Stand

Probably wouldn't waste time on a climber for hill country. Trees out there are rarely tall or straight. Lock on or saddle and sticks would be my rec.

If you're dead set on a climber, the Summit Open Shot is tough to beat for public land. Super light and open front which helps in bow hunting IMO.

I’m happy with my Summit Viper. Easy to attach to the tree and pack back up. Comfortable and stable. I bought the saddle bags from Summit to add on so I can throw a drink, bleat call, cover scent spray and my bow release in there to carry

Whatever style or brand you choose, look for one with a fish netting type of seat. They are very comfortable, and you don't have to worry about rain getting cushion type seats wet. I have had an Ol Man Climber for years. I love mine. What ever you choose, purchase a quality full body harness, and a Life Line Treestand Climbing Rope. Both will keep you safe while climbing and descending a tree, thus preventing falls.

Get 25ft up in a Texas mesquite... you'll be moving like a light action fishing pole

Came here to post this. I miss my openshot. I sold it and bought a viper since my walks got shorter. The feller whose land I was hunting passed and now I'm back to public. It is light, packs easy, quiet to climb with if you're not fat, and sturdy.

LOL, no kidding. Where i go is on the North end, still a good bit of oak in the thick areas with adjacent mesquite flats.

your first and most important purchase is finding a safety harness that is comfortable, wear it and use every time you are in that stand, your family needs you around in complete working order, no excuses...

This.

If you purchase a stand new it will come with a harness.

I’m going to give you an option that a lot of people haven’t adjusted to yet but if you’re truly trying to hunt public land and need to be as mobile as possible, a hunting saddle is going to be you’re best bet. Do your research and see if this is a possibility for you. You may be surprised.

Tethrd Mantis

Oh and the great thing about the saddle is that it is your safety harness.

tree saddle is not a safety harness, it is a tree seat with no backup safety system, wear a safety harness! you have a false sense of security and a horrific accident waiting to happen...

No argument here on safety harness, I have three young kids.

Considered a saddle, but feel like I should comfortable up there in something a little more robust first. Saddle is in my future.

I love my summit Goliath, that said if I was getting started and only going to have one I would do climbing sticks and a lightweight lockon. I can get in smaller trees and move around branches. That becomes huge on public where you can't cut limbs.
