Question about flying/checking in a pistol
I've flown with guns many times and just checked them in by themselves in hard cases.

Was wondering if anyone knows if you can put a pistol in a small hard-sided locked case, then put this inside a larger checked bag. Would just be one pistol to bring for carrying/self defense when out of town, as long as the gun laws there permit.

Would be nice to not have to carry more stuff and would save some money also.

Yes you can do it but you need to tell the ticket counter when checking in. IT has to be in locked box. They will issue some type of receipt for it then you can put it in a checked bag. When you arrive, you present that receipt and claim it. My wife has done it recently with no problems. I might a detail or two wrong as I didn't fly with her, but she said it was really easy.

Okay cool, yeah definitely planned on making them aware. Do you happen to know what type of case she used? If I remember correctly you don't use TSA approved locks on gun cases?

I remember a few times when I was young and my dad just put my 410 in the bottom of his duffle bag and just didnt tell them

re: Question about flying/checking in a pistol
I was going to use a case like this on a flight to MN some months back, but the meeting I was going to was cancelled so I stayed home. My plan was to lock the case to the internal frame of my checked luggage. Do not pack ammo in the same container as the gun. Read and re-read (then read again) the rules of both the airline you're travelling on as well as TSA. Leave plenty of time in your schedule. Do not use TSA locks. Carry a copy of the rules w/ you. Be prepared to be very courteous to an airline agent who knows little, if any about guns, and may not know the rules as well as you. When you get to the ticket counter, don't yell, "I've got a gun to check!" You should be fine. Good luck w/ your trip.
