Looking to have a metal shop built (24x36). I know wood frame is cheaper, and easier to finish interior. But how much cheaper? how much less wind rating? Rafters or trusses for 24' with wood? Just trying to decide if worth the extra cost of steel frame. Anyone with experience on both?

I have a Mueller metal building and it's great. But I would go with a wood frame if I did it again. As you said it's easier to finish the inside of the wood frame. I think it would be easier to customize the wood frame if you ever decide to add on or make a change.

I hate working with metal. No clue on the price. Also, wood always looks better to me.

Had a 34x40 wood frame built not long ago, the metal frame quotes were about 10k higher

I looked heavily at both and couldn't justify the price difference in the metal. The only change I would consider is going with concrete permacolumns instead of post in ground.

My dad's shop is post in ground and is over 30 yrs old with no issues. It's not really
My an issue with good drainage.

Labor on a steel building will probably be less and you can buy high wind loads that would be hard to build with wood. With the new tariffs on steel I am not sure the cost vs. wood.

I will point out one thing--when using steel height is cheap. A 20 ft eve height is not much more expensive than a 16 foot.

In SE LA, they have issues with swelling soil, and slab on grade can be an issue. This baw isn't doing any geotech, so he needs to put it on post.

My 30 x40 and 40 x 120 is steel frame but they put 6 inch metal post 4 ft in the ground and built trusses. Theres 4 red iron trusses in the 30 x 40. I poured a 4 inch slab didn't need beams..to finish it on the inside I shot 2x4s to the perlin with a Ramset. Then used 1x12 rough cut lumber to skin the walls.
I'm pretty close to the coast so I was able to get a better wind rating with the metal.

For me it came down to the builder. The better builder in my area does metal buildings so that’s what I went with.

If going metal, call simpsons out of marksville. They just put up my 30x40x14 and Im very happy with it. Slab was done in 1 day..... 10 days later they came back after slab had cured and had the entire building up by 3pm
