And more money than he knows what to do with. That pond must have cost him two trillion dollars.

1/2 mile from the bayou: Water table is probably around 6' below the surface unless its been raining a lot. You'll hit cypress trees around the 15'-16' mark. Get rid of the top 6" of organics, the next 10" is the crust, then its going to be all fat brown clays. I wouldn't use any of it under a house. Expect $5-$6 to dig the pond and spread onsite. $8-$12 to dig and truck it.

Geotech is a key component and finding a contractor experienced specifically with building a ponds. Need to locate the clay layer unless you have an enormous amount of runoff to the pond area. I would recommend that you have at least 5x the surface area runoff per area of pond. Also try to have at least a small area that is significantly deeper than the average depth 10+' deep. Even if its only 20' circle. Will help in winter and summer months.
I have a pond here in Texas that is 5 acres and I wish I had more area running off to it. I had to supplement with a well. My pond was dug with dirt being sold but it took about 3 years to complete that way. Otherwise its about $5 a cubic yard for dig and compact onsite typically around here.

We have a pond a quarter mile from Bayou Lafourche in Raceland. It was dug about 20 years ago. Guy who dug it sold the dirt so we got the pond for free. The water does get low when we are in a drought but so far the fish haven't died. There are 5 or 6 cypress stumps at the bottom.
The guy digging it actually found an old cannon ball about 1 foot down.

He's been saying he's going to do a cost break down at some point, but I feel like he was pushing it off and not going to.
Either way, its an awesome project and I love following the build.
