I recently got an old boat trailer for cheap that while rusted is still solid. What are my options on painting it? I was thinking of using a wire wheel and a palm sander and then cold galvanizing it. Are there any products that aren't too pricey that I can just slap on top of the rust?

edit: anybody use this? LINK

I'm two years into a paint job on a rusty jon boat trailer with this stuff. Has held up very well. I knocked as much surface rust off as I could with a wire brush first.

Wire brush, lube, bust rust, apply cpc and then paint to prevent.

just googled this. If i can get the paint to last two years for that price I'm fine with it. I'll give this a try, thanks.

edit: did you paint over it with another paint?

Nope, it's flat black so I just left it like that. I think I went through two or three cans on a 14' trailer, so for about 20 bucks all in I was happy with the result.

Mine is an old homemade trailer for a 14 ft jon. It was 50 bucks with papers so I'm trying not to go too crazy with it. 20 bucks sounds like the perfect price

POR-15 or Permatex makes a rust treatment too. I’ve used the Permatex one with good results. Prime over it then paint it if you want it to last and look good.

They make sanding discs for an angle grinder. Welders call them soft pads. They work awesome and remove rust and such quick. Would be great for easy work for your project.

Ospho it to arrest the rust.

HOW SKYCO OSPHO WORKS

quote:

When applied to rusted surfaces, it resists/retards rust in chemical change on drying to a tough, hard surface ready for priming. A paint job will last longer after an application of OSPHO because subsequent paint coating securely attaches itself so that moisture and oxygen normally do not attack the metal. OSPHO is water-thin, can cover a larger area than paint, and goes on easily. It is equally effective for exterior and interior work alike. SKYCO OSPHO: a balanced formula of Phosphoric, Dichromate, Wetting Agents and Extenders . . . compounded exclusively by the Skybryte Company since 1947 ... recommended by paint manufacturers.

It will take you forever with a wire wheel or brush.

Ive redone a few livestock trailers. My process is a 6" orbital polisher with a box of hook n loop sandpaper circles, you will go through a bunch but they arent too expensive. You can get a decent spray gun for under $100 and compressor and hit it with primer. Youll want to make sure you have a good moisture filter on your compressor. I then use the Rustoleom farm and implement paint, thinned with mineral spirits. I also add a hardener additive that seems to help, but I'm not fully sold on needing it. For tight spots I sand by hand.

One last tip is please get a mask. The rust coming off will be everywhere and youll want to keep from inhaling the fresh paint youre laying down.

Good luck, you'll be happy you did it.

I for sure will be wearing a mask. I've gotten sick from inhaling dust while grinding on galv back when I was young and dumb. Thanks
