Outdoor lighting or just a contractor question

If a contractor is supplying the parts (in this case lights) is it common for there to be a markup on the parts.
I guess it doesn’t really matter if they charge me their cost for parts and charge me a little more to install or markup a percentage and charge me less to install.
I guess the bottom line is how much the job will cost?

Yes, they are essentially selling you the lights. You get to pay markup and taxes and all that stuff.

Thats not how business works.

Typically 15-20% on parts unless you're a jerk, then it goes up from there

Absolutely marking up atleast 20%. Used to work for a yacht management company in FL. We got our parts mostly heavily discounted and only marked up 20% from what we paid (not typical). Still can’t out cheaper for the customer for us to buy and install than for them to buy and us to install.

Yes they should mark them up. They are likely getting a discount because they buy in volume throughout the year and you don’t. He’s also paying for his business expenses, taxes, insurance, labor, equipment, etc so he can provide you a service. Let the guy make a living. For what it’s worth, I’m in landscape lighting sales to contractors. They aren’t making a “killing”.

Look I understand they have to make a profit, pay for overhead, a crew etc. But it chaps my arse when he’s charging me or trying to charge me $250 each for a downlight when he only probably paid maybe $80.

I own a landscape design/build company.
Is the $250 including install? The low voltage transformer? A lot of factors you’re leaving off.

Yes that’s including install, the low voltage transformers are extra.

I rarely put much markup on AC units, but my labor is premium. I sell Labor.
It does not matter how you derive it, at the end, after the supply houses are paid, misc. truck items are covered, gas, etc. the rest is profit.
You know what the final tally needs to be. How you derive it does not matter.
People of La do not like all that big company small print, uniform policy crap.
They like their same AC man, come on in eat a bowl of red beans, hows your mom doing, etc.

I agree. I don’t have a problem with a markup - these guys have to make a living. The thing that chaps my arse is don’t tell me a light fixture is $250 and I can find it for about $105.

I found a great AC man about 3 miles from my house. He runs 1 truck with his nephew. He should be retired but just enjoys the work. He's done everything from replace entire HVAC systems in our rentals to running over to my house and changing a buss fuse for my wife when I'm out of town.
HE IS PRICELESS. I pay him whatever he asks bc he's always fair and most importantly he always shows up!
