You're paying the extra money for increased durability and less weight

Thanks, Ace. I liked the old school look and will look around, but honestly don't know a whole lot about the various manufacturers... With that said, I do like the fixed stock better for some reason. Guess I'll have to shop around and hope I don't get taken too bad.

Well, there's nothing wrong with that - I checked the Armalite site just out of curiosity - and they don't have a straight old school anything. A lot of stock guns with your features are going to end up being CA compliant, which you don't want. Your biggest challenge is going to be finding an A1 buttstock and the triangular handguards. You may have to build.

I have an A2 model. You can find them or just build one yourself.

Rock River makes a nice A2 and you may like the A4 as well.

If this is your first AR I would reccomend going with a carbine. You're inevitably going to want to put a grip pod, a $50 scope and backwards MBUS sights on it. The A2 configuration wouldnt allow for the accessories.

Sure it will; there's a hole in top of the A2 handle designed for a scope mount. A.R.M.S. #2, iIrc.

Those $50 red dots, though.

Thanks everyone, I will check it out. For some reason, I just like that old school look although the grip isn't a deal breaker. I'll check out the A2s also.

I'm thinking of building an M-16 A3 style AR with a 20" barrel. Any suggestions on 20" uppers?

Is there much of a difference between lowers? Are the Anderson's ok or are they lacking in the QC dept?

I'm not sure man. I actually just got a stripped upper and lower from them for $50 a pop but I haven't started building yet. They seem to fit together nicely. The takedown pins line at least. No blemishes.

I'm just curious if I'm wasting money on a $200 stripped lower if a $70 one will do just as good of a job.

You can't go wrong with a PSA lower. They usually have them for $90, and I've never heard of anyone having issues with their QC.

So I checked out Rock River. I found a complete upper for $540 and a complete RR lower for $300. A fully built rig is a little over $1000.
