BEST AR-15 THREAD:
so, you want to buy an ar-15, huh?
sorry to post this again, but it is too informative to leave off an official AR thread.
very long, but the most in depth ar purchasing/choosing thread out there.
keep in mind that this was written in 2008 and things have changed since then.
but using his guidelines, he can show you what to buy and how to qualify it.

Has anyone located a place that has ANY complete AR's in stock from ANY maker?
I'll probably just go with another Mini-14 since they don't have the stigma attatched yet and are still available..
But in case anyone knows of a source please help a few brothers out

Over the years, I've sent that all over the Internets. Excellent thread.
Props to the OP for starting this one, as well.

Just noticed this was stickies. Hopefully this helps consolidate things

I just finished building one for my old boss. Have $800 in the rifle. PSA M4 upper with chrome lined barrel & PSA lower. Magpul MBUS rear sight, magpul MOE rear stock.
I still have one stripped lower that i am going to hang onto. Good thing is that by owning the lower you will be able to put on a pre-ban upper and be fine as long as this coming ban will be like the 94 clinton ban.

As far as parts are concerned, from what I remember about the Clinton gun ban was that "evil guns" were ones with collapsible stocks, pistol grips, removable magazines and removable flash hider/compensator. High capacity magazines were a no no also.
I think it was combination of 3 out of 4 of these made the rifle an "assault weapon", so most AR's of the 90's had the M16A1 stock and the compensator was pinned to the barrel. Once you have a fixed stock and a pinned compensator you only have 2 out of 4 so the rifle was legal to own. Anyone feel free to correct me if any info is incorrect, I was a young whipper snapper during most of this and wasn't really into guns yet.

That pretty much sums it up. Take away the threaded barrel and bayonet lug and the same gun was perfectly legal. I bought a COLT MT6700 competition HBAR in 1999 and it has no baynet lug or threaded barrel. I also bought a bulgarian AK in 1998 and it has a pinned on muzzle break and thumbhole stock instead of pistol grip but is functionally the same rifle capable of doing the same jobs. Also to get around the ban Intratec took the DC TEC-9 and took off the threaded barrel. Voila legal
Only thing it did do was create a huge over inflated market for banned items manufactured before 1994. I remember paying $30 for AR-15 30 rnd mags in the late 90's.

Forgot about the bayonet lug. Personally I can do without this, although my Bushy has one.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Do you think they will throw suppressors in the new AWB too?
I know they are already a NFA item but they might say what the hell, ban those too. Who needs that.

I don't get the hate for suppressors. The people who are pushing the gun ban keep using European countries as examples of gun control places, but in most of those countries it is required to use a suppressor while hunting.
Not sure if they were banned in the last one, and since ole Joe is heading this thing up, I would expect him to start with it and start adding to the list.

Just an FYI: I was at Nick's in Garyville this morning shooting and he had quite a few Pmags left. I got the last 3 black ones but he had several tan ones left (probably 10-15). Him and Cabelas were both out of .223 in anything more than a box of 20 (I'm waiting on FedEx to show up with my 1000 rounds now
)

Because they are scary and only mass murderers have them.
But really, I don't get the hate either.

Have any of you ever had feed ramp problems from a brand new ar? I have pretty much narrowed it down to this issue, however I have never personally had any problems with this. My dad bought an m&p 15 today and it shoots and ejects fine when a round is force charged into the chamber, but has issues picking ammo off the magazine. It came with a pmag, and I have used several of mine on it along with different types of ammo. I have polished m4 ramps on mine and have never had this issue. Any suggestions aside from calling s&w and shipping the upper back to them. He is just getting into black rifles and is discouraged now to say the least, but rightfully so. I'd be pissed.Eta: I stripped it down, cleaned it well, focusing a lot of detail towards the chamber.

I put a couple hundred rounds through my new M&P today. I had a fail to eject on the fourth or fifth round and had to break it down since it jammed the next round in under the spent one. After that though it ran like a top

It's not a fte though. I could deal with that. The ramps on this particular gun are not allowing the bullet to advance all the way into the chamber. It goes about 3 quarters of the way forward. Almost like its not machined correctly, although it looks normal to me. I'm going to call them in the morning, just asking.
