OBs take on slug guns vs high powered rifles

Rifle season is right around the corner and I'm thinking about buying a rifled barrel for my shotgun. I don't deer hunt very much but I may get to a few times this year. I have a .300 ultra mag but most of the shots are under 150 yards. Mossberg makes a scoped cantilever barrel for about 190 on cheaperthandirt.com and Remington makes one for about 225 on buds. With this money I could also buy 3 or 4 boxes of ammo for my rifle. What would you guys do and does anybody have any experience with the slug guns. I'm going to hang up and listen.

I personally have no need for a slug gun. Everywhere I hunt I can use a rifle. Unless you are planning on going somewhere that doesnt allow rifles then just use the rifle. You already own it and with the money you would spend on the barrel you could buy alot of 300RUM ammo.

I have a friend that has a slug barrel. He can shoot a 2" group at 150 yards. Downside is the shotgun with the rifled barrel and scope is much heavier than a rifle. Also, 150yds is pretty much the limit on them. All depends on what type of hunting you do. I walk a lot, and carry a climber, so a lightweight rifle with a short barrel works better for me. That 12ga slug is nasty though.

I dont see the point in wasting money on the barrel when you have a rifle that will do the job.

My brother has one and its awesome. That being said, I can use my 30/30 everywhere he can use his gun and more, so I have no use for it.

What kind of 30/30? I'm debating on purchasing one for giggles. I only deer hunt once or twice a year so I don't feel like sinking a whole lot of money into a rifle.

I went hog hunting here in Florida last weekend. The plot was wide east to west (8-10 miles) but not so much north to south (less than a 1/2 mile in some areas) so the owner asked us not to use rifles. I used my Remington 11-87 with my smooth bore barrell (took the choke out) and shot Remington 1-1/4 oz. "Slugger" rifled slug (1560fps). First hog I hit was a sow at about 55-60 yards. Put the site just off the front shoulder and the round went in about 1/2" under aim point. The next morning I hit a small boar at 80-90 yards with same accuracy and result. Paid $5.15 for a 5 round box. I guess what I'm longwindedly trying to say is keep your rifle for the long shots but under 100 yards you don't need the slug gun or barrell just the right slug.

Slug guns are awesome for deer hunting.
We hunt in pretty thick cutover, so the furthest shot is about 50 yds.
My dad shoots a short barrel 20ga. He always drops em in their tracks and the short barrel is really easy to maneuver in a box stand.
I have my rifle in case there's anything standing on the road when we walk in.
eta: it's an 870.

Only reason I'd buy a slug gun is if I lived in Iowa and had to. That being said, I live in Iowa...
