have you ever used sweetgum instead of oak? our place has a ton of gums, which i fricking hate, but would love to use for something productive.

here's a fun fact about the gum family, they were used (in one of the WWs, i think) to construct roads. they were stripped of their bark and squared off and laid side by side. the fibers of the blocks would fuse with one another creating one solid piece of wood.

*the more you know

Keep using oak and move on to your next OCD topic.

When I take down a sweetgum I just drag it off to the brush pile. That stuff is tough to split and fairly light. We've got 9 acres of woods and the drought has killed several trees so I've got more white oak than I can burn in several years (especially as warm as this winter has been).

My favorite firewood is dogwood, weirdly enough. When the state put a road through the local state forest they took down a lot of dogwood and the forest manager let me take what I wanted. The trunk is about the right size for a log so no splitting and the wood is dense as hell. Great fire wood. It sucks though because that area used to look great in the spring.
