Yes. The taxidermist usually throws the antlers in a pond or ant pile to remove it.
This is absolutely wrong. If you want your buck to be mounted with the velvet still on, which I can't think of a reason not to, your taxidermist should be able to preserve it. I killed a nice 8 point when I was in high school opening day that was still in velvet. I made sure I took him to a taxidermist who knew what he was doing and my deer still looks great. I feel lucky to have a deer mounted that is still in velvet. It is pretty rare this far south. I think it usually has to do with a testosterone/gonad issue that doesn't make the velvet come off soon enough...
