i'm not seeing any online diagrams, although i could be just missing it.

If I'm wiring the two batteries in series (one battery's + to the other battery's -), how do i hook the charging system up?

of course one bank is going to the startup battery.

does each of the trolling motor batteries get their own charging bank? or with both batteries being wired in series negate this and cause a cross-circuit short?

thanks as always.

Each battery gets its own bank even though they are in series.

thanks for that clarification.

one more thing:

once i use the negative and positive of each battery for the series, can any wire go to either of these posts? Or they are supposed to be left alone and only use the other negative and positive.

I’m not quite sure what you mean but you will have:

Battery one
positive (+ to tm, + from charger)
negative (- to + on battery 2, - from charger)

Battery two
Positive (+ to - on battery 1, + from charger)
Negative (- to tm, - from charger)

i bought this boat and it had a jumper cable (maybe 12 gauge) from negative to the other negative. So obviously that wasn't right.

i have another hot wire (not sure if trolling motor wire or to the circuit board) that's going to the positive post of the "series" jumper.

so when i'm hooking up the series i get an immediate spark/ burn to the post.

thanks for taking the time.

Negative to negative maybe suggests the previous owner was running those batteries in parallel.
What do you mean when you say circuit board? Are you trying to run something other than the trolling motor off of this?
I would find out what the red wire is coming from, you shouldn’t be welding the terminal to the post by just connect the negative from one to the positive of the other with nothing else connected.

the second red wire was another positive to the trolling motor.

and he had that small jumper cable from one negative to the other negative. however there was NEVER another second negative wire coming from the trolling motor, only that single one. So two hots and one negative from the trolling motor.

i took off the #2 red altogether and put the bigger jumper cable on and it got a lot of power, the full 24V I'd imagine.

so did he have it right the first time and the jumper was just too small?

thanks for your time.

He may have had it wired for a 12/24 setup. If you google 12/24 trolling motor diagram it will make more sense.

You can jump your starting battery off of one of the trolling motor batteries but it has to be a certain one.

I think the one that the trolling motor negative goes to will cause a short.

Best to just disconnect the jumper wire between the two.

I tried this recently and did something way wrong. I saw smoke and the breaker tripped. A it turned out, the issue with starting wasn't even battery related. lol.
