Have a client that built cedarwood (rough planks) closets. They don't smell like cedar anymore. This is a VERY nice home and we do not want to sand the wood because of the dust. We are thinking about using cedar oil on the surface, but need to use some kind of odorless oil to dilute the concentrated cedar oil with. Is this a good idea or not? What kind of oil would work for this? Thanks.

I don’t know about the oil bringing back the scent, but if you have to sand, get a festool sander with their vacuum system for very very little airborne dust.

Only way to get that good smell back is sanding it.

The only thing that bothers me is that they used some siding grade cedar and shiplapped it. It is not the nice, smooth red part of the wood like is used in cedar chests.

Showing any lite colors in the boards? If so, that is the sap wood of cedar. There is little to no oils in that wood. That is set off to the side and sold as #4 grade due to no oils in it.

Rough sawed cedar that you have. You can still sand it some. Leave it rough. It don't take much.

Another thing you can do. Get some fresh cutting of cedar and chop them up. Stick it in some fine netting or stockings and hang it in there.

Plenty of good Sanders w vacuum systems. If you in the biz you should already have one.

I agree with Fish on this. Ive found that if you cut and hang a couple boards with hangers in the closet you can remove them, sand or cut a piece off and hang them back you can keep the smell.
