why do you think I may not need an ambidextrous one bapple? is the s&w easy for a lefty to operate efficiently?
I can't tell if you're original post alludes to you being a lefty or not. Ambidextrous is really only a necessity if you're a lefty or someone else who may use the gun (wife, kid, etc.) is a lefty as well.
The S&W M&P compact would be great. They actually come with three different grip swells to fit all hands (small, medium, and large). This would be perfect if you want to teach your kids or wife how to use it, which I suggest you do.
The magazine release can be reversed for lefty use as well. If you're a dedicated lefty, it would be good for you to have that, unless you've gotten used to releasing magazines with your index finger.
You can also buy an M&P compact with a thumb safety if that's important for you. They sell them in both safety and non-safety form, so you can pick and choose.
But I think the M&P is a great handgun, and a good first handgun. Hope you make the right decision.

Buy a full size pistol that feels good, check out Barrettas px storm or whatever, concealed carry needs to be a 2 nd gun of smaller nature

Right. If he needs a truck/home gun, then I think a full size is definitely the way to go. If he gets comfortable with it and wants to conceal, buy a compact later.
