Need from input for strange spots in deer meat

This is from a friend who cleaned a deer last year. He killed a doe and when he was cleaning, he noticed green sacs in the joint areas of the deer. He cut around it but then noticed some spots in the meat. Any idea what this is? He tried to get MDWF to send off a sample but they would never call him back

Sort of like rice breast in waterfowl?

I think it’s tapeworm cysts.Probably any veterinarian could tell you for sure.

Looks like some sort of cyst. When I was a butcher, occasionally I'd come across large green cysts in the muscle tissue. Not sure what causes them but the packer would always give us credit on the defects.

So would the meat still be good to eat? The friend gave me all the meat because he didn't want to chance it but I'm debating on using the meat as dog food or eating it

I’ve found cysts in deer before and just cut them out of the meat when butchering. But it’s never been more than one or two cysts. You mention that the hunter noticed them “in the joint areas of the deer.” I’m curious if it was in just one joint or several of them. And are they only in the joints? I’m not to bothered by cysts but if you’re seeing them throughout the meat I wouldn’t risk it.
If in doubt I would pitch it. You can always get more deer meat.
Edit: I wonder if this is somehow related to the stress the deer was under because of the drought this summer?

This was a deer from last year. Are you able to see the multiple pictures at the link above or is it just one picture? The big green filled sacs were only in joint areas but was in multiple areas

quote:I'm going to say that as long as it it cooked to or above 155°F it is SAFE to eat. I can't speak on if it will be good to eat. But as always, when in doubt throw it out.
