Need advice on buying pedal kayak for fishing.

Will not be fishing salt water or big water. Mostly ponds and bayous around BR. Trying to decide if I need 12’ or 10.5. Seems like Old Town or Hobie are best. Would settle for used one if in good shape. Thanks for any help.

Spend the money. Get the Pro Angler. You’ll always compare every other kayak to that one. It’s worth the money.

Once you have instant reverse, you'll never go back. Old Town/Native/Wilderness. Avoid Jackson for now.

I have owned both a hobie and an old town kayak. Probably one of the few on here who have been in both. The biggest difference is obviously the pedal drive system both with their pros and cons.
The best kayak I have been in hands down is the Old Town PDL. Like Alx said, once you have instant reverse using a mirage drive just doesn't cut it for me. The only real negative on the PDL is that if you get into some serious grass/lillies, the prop can seize up. You can get most of it off my pedaling in reverse and getting an aftermarket weed cutter for your prop, but it will still be an occasional inconvenience.

Would definitely go with the 12’ like with any boat lil extra space is worth it
And it’ll track better in the water also
As for the difference in drives this is all personal preference and where you’re fishing IMO
I’ve owned just about ever type out there from Jackson, Wilderness and 2 Hobies (PA and Outback)
Like others have said instant reverse is nice to have but I fish a lot of heavy grass areas hunting reds and had to clean it way more than I wanted and no matter what anybody says those “weed guards” don’t work
once it’s around the prop/shaft it’s there until you pull it off
So the Hobie drive was the winner for my style of fishing
I’d say if ya fishing grass and shallow go Hobie
But if pond and lil to no grass a prop drive is gonna work just fine
If ya can demo and couple rigs 1st see what ya like and don’t, last thing you want to buy a boat and never had a chance to try it out and be miserable on the water
Tight lines

Lol Jackson makes a fine kayak but continue to bash. Carry on

Check out the Jackson bite Fd. Love that thing. Cruise over 4 all day and it’s super stable.

Have you seen the updated pedal drive??? Probably not. You may want to check it out.

You interested in a used pro angler?

Possibly. How old, where mainly used, condition?

Apparently you haven’t fished much with a 360. Great concept. Love the innovation. Part of creating new products you will have issues down the line. I’ll leave it at that

He hates Hobie more than Jackson. He's a Native guy.

What this guy said....except I can't vouch for Wilderness as I have no experience with it.

quote:No, you're a blind Hobie fan boy. I listed 3 brands. I have zero brand loyalty on yaks. I have no idea why you harbor ill will against a human because of a piece of plastic. I have objective reasons for any review here. You have, " muh club all uses Hobie" .

Are you putting it in the bed of a truck or on top of your SUV/Car? Will there be times you need to lug the kayak any distance?
The 10fts are lighter and easier to move around.

The longer kayaks are faster and track better then shorter kayaks. I would take the weight of the kayak in consideration. See if you can go demo some brands. Like others said instant reverse in peddle yaks is awesome. The issue right now is inventory which means some shops can’t demo as much as they would like. Depending on where you live I’d recommend pack and paddle, backpacker, marsh and bayou, or everything kayak. Good luck
