LL Bean sells a great bike that meets those needs. I got one for the same type use and have enjoyed it.

Go to a bike store and try a few things out. Talk to somebody in the store that knows brands. I'd say that's your best bet

Basically all of the big box stores and chain stores sell variations of the same bikes that are made in china, even mongoose and schwinn. There isn't much difference store to store. In other words, what you call a walmart special isn't going to be much better or worse than what you'd find for similar money at academy or target. That being said though, I have a couple halfway decent mongoose bikes that are holding up alright. Both were less than a couple hundred bucks.

You'll step up in price when you walk in to a bike shop.

What are you trying to spend?

I'm 6'3" as well and use a single speed 29" mountain bike from bikesdirect.com. Absolutely love it

Diamondback Overdrive 29er. Its a three by and i would personally spend the extra money for a two by w/ a better drive train but sounds like you won't be going off road that much. Its only $374.00.

I got a great deal on a specialized rockhopper 29.

I probably never trail ride. My wife got the specialized hybrid. Hers is much more comfortable riding with the boys. I probably should’ve got the hybrid. But i do like my bike and it is a good ride

I did this bought a Trek Xcaliber. It’s great for riding in the neighborhood with Junior and still has the ability to go off road and trail ride as I know that if he’s anything like I was he will want to do. I figured buy one bike that will last a lifetime and I can be there and spend time with my son as his interests change.
