My husband and I bought a house about 80 yards from the Vermilion River and it has a lot of landscaping. We’ve been here about three months and my husband just saw our first snake this weekend. He’s a wuss and is scared of snakes and we want to see if there is any type of plant or powder or something we can put around our house to somewhat keep the snakes away...

Anything?

Remove all the landscaping so that its just short grass in the back yard. Snakes like to be hidden. That wont guarantee you never see one, but it would cut down on the sightings. You moved next to a river. What do you expect? If he doesnt like snakes tell him to move to Alaska.

Well it’s kind of a dream house and the landscaping looks really good, so moving and removing the landscaping are not an option.

No old Indian tricks or anything?

Not really. You'll hear some say moth balls but I killed a 3 ft moccasin coiled up next to a pile that my wife put under our carport at our first house

Get a couple of Guinea birds? Maybe a couple cats? Indian tricks would involve manning up and killing said snake.

Nope. All you can do is reduce cover and food.

A better option is to become educated about snakes. We fear what we don't understand.

Get a blue heeler and you won’t have a snake problem

It was a baby one but he said it had a triangle head and snapped at the shovel so he’s convinced it was poisonous. We found some stuff at Home Depot that supposedly dissolves in standing water and kills mosquito larvae, so we were wondering if something like that exists for snakes.

The best repellent for snakes you don't want around are other snakes like speckled king snakes.

The neighbor actually has a blue heeler and he runs all around our yard. His owner even mentioned he takes care of snakes when we moved in.

Are they predisposed to kill snakes?

At walmart they sell it in sporting goods. Just ask for a box of #8 winchester.

They make something called "Snake Away" but it's just mostly ground up moth balls and it doesn't work. My wife is terrified of them so I deal with this too.

I grew up in the country and they don't really bother me. Most of the time she sees one I just tell her that I killed it and toss it out of the yard
