I was in the exact opposite position. As the step dad I wanted to get him his first deer the right way. His dad who only has to be his dad 4 days a month (every other weekend) let him shoot a doe running dogs. Sucked because I had spent a lot of time and money so id have a place for us to hunt and I wasnt there to experience the joy with him.

Its ok to be happy and sad imo. One of the tough things about having failed relationships with kids involved. Id be willing to be he probably wishes it was with you also.

I knew there were many other possibilities, but I went ahead a posted what I thought from the thread in case it may help you work through it. Glad you didn't take it the wrong way and get offended. You will get your turn I'm sure, but like others have said, glad his stepdad is a decent guy

divorces on young kids are hard enough, don't do or say anything like "Wish it was with me" to the kid, no need to make him feel any more guilt than he already will. Nothing but congrats and encouragement

how should I feel about this? I'm torn cause I am proud, but pissed he wasn't with me...

Whatever you do, don't let on that you are anything but excited for him.

Even if it irks the hell out of you, just fake it till you make it. He'll appreciated it even more when he's an adult when he can look back and realize that it was tough for you, yet you were supportive and still kept things positive.

Be glad that he has both of you there for him. Remember it's him that you want to be happy and I'm sure he is.

And remember you got to his mom first...

Go get his first buck and make it a memorable season for everyone
