Does the niece come by regularly? Id guess not. For grandfolks, anytime a wayward grandchild randomly comes to visit chances are they're looking for some kind of handout.

Don't think they can trace a gun back using the background check system, but I'm betting this gun predates that system anyway.
I would either report it stolen or find that f'n dude and "explain" why he made a bad decision.

Please God tell me you have the serial number, make and caliber of the gun. Those are needed it to enter it as stolen into NCIC.

It probably won't happen fast, but guns are recovered more than most other property because they are run through NCIC more than other property for obvious reasons.
ETA: From the sounds of it, these POS people are going to pawn or sell it for quick cash to boot.
