I doubt very many people actually know

I guess all the non farmers on here should start farming. They make it sound pretty cake.

I'm late to this party but I don't hate farmers. Just don't believe in the poor, pitiful farmer hype when they have multiple tractors that cost as much as my house and everybody in their family drives a 30k+ vehicle

Didn't know it was that high, when I drive by the fields it doesn't look like that much, but after I see the compressed bales I knew there had to be a fair amount. The new knowledge on the weight of the bales helps to put it in prospective...

With few exceptions, NELA Farmers meet most stereotypes discussed in this thread. Can't comment on other parts of the state or country.
I think the govt sees farming as a primary investment that cannot afford to fail as compared to a typical business.

Gotta new combine last year, it cost 300k.. actually it was 2 yrs old.
Rented a new tractor couple weeks ago bc it had a guidance system in it for laying perfect rows... 14 days the bill was 16k.. no subsides paid for that one... that had to in the form of a check.
You rich like that brah?

Yeah, it's impressive how tight you can pack it. Just FYI, the round modules wrapped in yellow plastic are about 4 bales apiece.

I don't understand how you do not understand how any small business owner that is not a farmer would be a bit bitter towards farmers receiving subsidies from the government.

Did y'all not pick up that the direct payments are gone after this year?

Business subsidization is more akin to social welfare (hybrid socialism)
If it improves your lifestyle, it's also individual welfare.

Lee, 99.999 % of the time, I dont look at OT, so don't lump me in there with what you read over there.. I have stated repeatedly that i get tired of (maybe not you or anyone on here)THE poor farmers that are in Cabo for a month, etc., and you know exactly what i'm talkin' bout.
I also said nothing about the risk, other than anyone else in business is at risk.

I cant speak for your balance sheet or anyone elses.

Cost is too high.. everything from JD green, to seed, to chemical, to land rent, to deisel fuel.

barry obama is subsidizing yall to go.
I see how it works now.

Giving it back to mickey. Hhmmmm, I bet they got some sweet tax breaks to build it there. Somebody start a thread.

THIS.
I don't care what your justifications are, that's MY MONEY that's buying YOUR truck that was taken from me by the government and given to you. And you'll vote your pocketbook just like the rest of those who are on the government dole no matter the long term consequences for everyone else. Who did Iowa vote for? Yeah. Exactly.
BOOO HOOO People don't like us?!! Waaaaaa.
Get a real job or don't take our money and you might not feel that way. Or just drop the pretense that you aren't on the government dole. Some folks get an Obamaphone, some folks get an Obamatractor. That's you.

Not to pry in your business, but Case offered us a 600 hr lease for 27k/yr. New tractor with guidance. I think it was the 285 or 305 model.

why are we asking for this thread to be deleted? can we not have a discussion about this? don't get so offended when people question your lively.

That tells me all I need to know. There is no way possible that farming can be a profit generator without assistance. Personally, I'd rather keep the beans USA, rather than Guatemalan. I'll throw a nickel out to help

b/c if you haven't farmed you really cannot understand one side. and if you have farmed you can't truly understand the other. only creates controversy. did not mean to brind OT style to the OB
Posted on 11/11/12 at 2:21 pm to Ole Geauxt
geauxt, IDK many of those farmers, I honestly dont.
The ones I know are trying to do the best they can.
Get up early, make good decisions and hope at the end of the year you come out ahead.
To liken farmers to welfare recipents is retarded.
I know it and you know it.
