Looks like the folks over at Matrix are selling a "new" fishing line called Matrix Silky String.

After a cursory glance, it appears to simply be repackaged Berkley Nanofil.

Same "unifilament" language, same "maximum strength, minimum diameter" tag line and same "unified filament technology" advertisement.

Couldn't care less if they are using the same supplier, etc... but curious what this means for the future of nanofil? I use it on all my spinning gear and love it. Hopefully if Berkley drops it then someone else keeps it going.

Ha! In the top picture, they misspelled technology as technologh.

Probably made in China.

Nice catch! I didn't notice it.

If Matrix starts carrying all the line sizes and color options as nanofil, I'd happily buy from them, being a local company, as opposed to Berkley.

What's the target use for Nanofil? Basically thinner diameter Mono?

It's a superline, so most similar to braid. Very thin diameter. No stretch. And specifically designed to use on spinning gear.

The casting distance on spinning gear is really the calling card for this line. It flies off the spool. 20% better casting distance vs same pound test 4 strand braid (like Power Pro) in my experience and dramatically better than mono or fluoro. Also, because it is a solid line and not woven (like braid) there is no room for things like salt crystals to form and cause micro abrasions in your line after use.

Sounds like a winner for tightlining jigs. How's the memory or tendency to get coily?

There is no memory at all. Some people find it too limp to be honest.

And the biggest common problem is breaking at the knot. There are a couple recommended knots with this line, so I'd look those up if you want to tie direct. If you're using a leader, I recommend the FG knot.

And tightlining jigs is absolutely a great application for it. Anywhere you'd use braid on spinning gear, swap out for this.

I am subscribed to the Matrix monthly bait box and just received my box yesterday and it came with this line. I will string it up on and test it out and will report back on how it performs.

Interesting, doesn’t it not get those ghost birds-nest like power pro. I love power pro but every other trip or so I get huge damn knot that requires cutting the line, for no damn reason during a cast. I am reeling in and it’s like wtf

I assume you're talking about wind knots. And Nanofil is definitely better about that but not immune.

I hate to break it to you, but those are usually angler induced.

To help with those, always close the bail with your hand (instead of reeling to engage the spool) and make sure when reeling that you apply tension whenever possible.

The most common cause of wind knots is loose line near the spool being reeled in and causing loops on the spool. Instead of just reeling in that loose line, pinch in your fingers to provide some tension. Once it is picked up, you no longer need to finger the line.

Do you need to use a leader when using this line?

Thats situationally dependent. In clear water for specs, I probably would. For reds, I probably wouldn't bother unless they're being really finicky. Although I might sharpie the last 3' for my own confidence.

With bass, it'd be dependent on water clarity.

But it's not clear/transparent like mono or fluoro. It's opaque like a braid.

Longest casting line I have ever used. I only use it for crappie fishing though. Nano to swivel, then a leader. The knot that works for me is nothing more than a uni-knot with one extra pass through the eye before beginning the loops.

Your thoughts using this on a bait caster jigging for winter specks using a fluro leader?

Normally use 12# mono or fluro but looking for something more sensitive this year for those light strikes.

I know but...just not a braid fan guess I've never found the right one.

It's not recommended for baitcasters due to its very slick feel and small diameter. It would bury on itself easily.

Not knowing what braids you've tried, my personal favorites are Suffix 832 and J-braid 8 grand. They're both 8 strand braids and are both really smooth and very manageable on baitcasters. I'd throw either in 30lb size for that application.

If your previous experience was older 4 strand braid (original Power Pro for example) then the 8 strand braids will be much more manageable in comparison.

If those don't work for you, I wouldn't hesitate to drop down to 10lb or 8lb fluoro for jigging those winter specs. In my experience they're not usually holding super tight to cover so you really don't need the higher abrasion resistance.

I am going to try it.

The damn wind knots I get could be caused like that, but being an old bait caster, (remember the Shakespeare Presidental 2, and ambassador 5000) I always finger palm or keep pressure on my Line with my hand. I just count on getting cuts on my first finger with braid, I get them every single trip, but it’s so callous now they rarely bleed. But I will watch that and see. My knots are typically 20 or 30 feet out or more and where the line has caught on something typically because the wind has blown a huge bow in the line.

Most commonly when fishing with popping corks. It’s no issue with mono but with braid any little thing and you have a huge tight mess. I know some of the new shimanos are designed to eliminate this issue but 200 bucks and up. I just always bring a back up.

Ordered some of this crap will give u a report in a few weeks.

I have used 40lb Gliss on a bait caster with good success. Frog rod.
