I've an Exide Deep Cycle Marine battery purchased from Academy 3 years ago. I checked the acid level and each cell was a little low. I refilled each cell with distilled water. I then placed it on fast charge(25 amps per hr)and it began drawing 40 amps.

It charged up until drawing 20 amps and stopped. Then the battery just continued to get hot on the sides, so I stopped charging it. Any ideas why it won't fully charge? Is the battery bad? This is my first experience I've had with deep cycle marine batteries. It has only been used with a trolling motor, it isn't used to start the outboard.

there's your best clue. if you didn't keep it on a float charge, those cells are going to be heavily corroded at this point and thus the battery is pretty much gone. The avg battery lasts about 3 years, and that's for batteries that are kept charged.

Also, it's better to do slow charges than fast charges in general.

when you replace that battery, do not ignore the importance of a float charger. a float charger will protect the cells a lot longer. Even a dinky solar charger is far better than nothing.

Just replaced 3yr old Dekas TM batteries. Replaced with gp31 AGMs with new charger. 3yrs for me seems to be the norm.

Went with a Walmart Everstart Maxx 800 cca. Has 2 year warranty. I am currently charging it up completely then will place on a trickle charger.

Boy I can't wait for solid state 12v batteries! Going to be a long wait.
