Um, aren't we talking about the .35 in TC Encore? Wasn't that the point of the thread? It's great in MS, end of story.

There are 1000 rifles great for MS. That doesn't exactly narrow shite down. Only rifle severely handicaps his capabilities all year long.

Spare me your almighty single shot cross hair theory... you better go knock on some damn wood.

The .35 Whelen is going to be a little less kick than a 300 or 7mm

It's got a pretty decent kick to it. Good thing you only need one shot to kill something unlike some other people

That doesn't make one fricking argument in favor of a single shot.

Can't hunt with the bolt during primitive season.

He asked for an opinion and I gave mine. Simple as that. Since I've actually used this gun, I know what I'm talking about. Oh, thanks for the warning about my single shot theory. It's worked for me for a long time...

Good thing i've been supporting a $300-$400 setup this whole time. I really would love to get the buffalo classic and hunt open sight for a change up.

In other words, since you own the gun and have a biased opinion.

The .35 Whelen is head and shoulders better than the 45-70 for MS primitive weapon hunting. There isn't any question. I would take one shot with a .35 Whelen over 3 with a 45-70...

So you're worried about the 12 days over the other 100?

It's an encore but not the pro hunter, he's been having it a few years.

What is the kick like on that 7mm?

It's not bad. That said, I've only shot it at deer and never all afternoon at the range.

Yes, I own one and it is great. I've seen the 45-70 shot no telling how many times and the .35 whelen is head and shoulders above it. My opinion is biased, but I did my research and shooting with both before I made my decision.

This is the route I went FWIW. Bought the 45-70 handi-rifle for the extra 2 weeks of season it allows me. The rest of the time I take the my tried and true .270 I can see the pro and con of each setup. I like having plenty of guns so I would probably go with two separate rifles but if someone was looking to consolidate and simplify things getting the one single shot may be practical. Sounds like the OP really likes this TC .35 Whelen rifle. So I say buy it. Worst case you end up only using it for primitive season then bringing your 30-06 for rifle season.

Why don't you share how many years you've been hunting and some stories of your many kills chad?

You've obviously never shot this gun. I don't hunt with it all year, but would feel very comfortable hunting with it the entire year out to 300 yards. Sometimes I take my .280 for a change of pace. For those 12 days, which are typically the best 12 in north MS, I would take it over the 45-70 every day of the week. Nothing against the 45-70...

there's not enough fire wood available to keep that camp fire burning long enough.

I'd love to hear some of Chads accomplishments. He sounds like he must be Jim Shockey...

Can't hunt with .35 in Louisiana, so that's not a choice I had. I was just using that as an example of why I don't like "generalist" guns.

I don't think Chad has an issue with the round itself, he just thinks it's a bad idea to get a single shot rifle.

Taking the round out of the equation, is the Thompson Center Pro Hunter a quality rifle. I say you can't compare it to the Remington 700 or even the Tikka T3. It carries a lifetime warranty, American made and a damn fine looking rifle.

It's all Mr Whitetail shoots! (probably because he is sponsored by them but that is for another thread)

I gotcha. In MS, you can hunt with either, and the choice is very easy...

Exactly and I can then put the .243 barrel on it and have a gun for my son.
