Group of 4 looking to do an elk hunt next year. Undecided on if we want to do a hike or horseback deal.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Want to start planning now so if we have to apply for tags we can get it all done. Tia

You’re years too late. You’ll have a much better hunt if you build points over time.
But in your situation, I’d go with these guys.

I bowhunted elk on public land in Co for 18 or so years. Always DIY so no experience with outfitters, but will will be happy to help with any questions. There is nothing like September in elk country!!

As I’ve looked into it I’m finding myself leaning more towards a diy mule deer hunt in Colorado. I understand my chances at success are very low being unfamiliar but have to start somewhere right?
I’m gonna start exploring some of the public land areas by map and try to make a decision on where I want to go and lodging options VS camping.
Hell, just walking around Colorado for a few days and camping sounds like a blast even if I don’t get to pull the trigger

You need to get familiar with how many points it takes to draw various hunt units. GOHUNT is a good source. There are some zero point units, but, for the most part, Western hunting is a multi year process.

Are over the counter tags still easy to get?
Is there a good place to buy them in advance?
Do I need to build points for archery hunts?
Any zones/areas better?
Can you harvest a cow?
I want tog eat started asap, my son is 3 and I want to be half arse decent at it in 10 years so I can take him
