Building up a 10/22. Use case is 3 position shooting at 25-50 yards and the occasional squirrel/rabbit hunt. Problem with just looking through a scope in a brightly lit store is you don't get a good feel for how the scope transmits light at those low dense Forrest light levels. Ideally the Parallax is set for 50 yards but if the scope is designed with the removable ring in the front I can adjust the objective myself. I'm currently using a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC which I adjusted the objective to 50 yards. Scope works great but It's just big and bulky looking on a small rimfire rifle. I'll call that the baseline and I don't want to go down in optical performance. I'd be very happy with a fixed 4x scope, but those seem to be going the way of the dodo bird. Looking to keep it around $200

Weaver and Leupold seem to be the only two I've seen in a brand I would trust that makes a 4x scope right now.

Weaver seems to be well respected on Rimfire Central but I don't have a local dealer so I haven't been able to look through one. RV-4 is about $140ish. No idea how they stack up in low light compared to the...

Leupold FX-1 looks good but I have no idea how good they are in lower light either. Same as the VX-1/2 maybe? Then I would say it's acceptable low light performance not good or great. VX-3 in the Win Mag is pretty great and noticeably better than my VX-2.

My other option is to go with a 2-7 power scope. That opens the door to a lot more options. Burris, Redfield, Sig Sauer, Leupold, Nikon, Vortex, etc.

The best deal I've seen is a Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35 at Dick's sporting goods. It's on sale for $149 and another $20 off $100 and it's just $129, $60 better than anywhere else and pts it at the same price as the Crossfire II. I've never used a diamondback but I have a XfireII and I find the optics acceptable but not as good as my Nikon. And it's really not much smaller than my Nikon I'll knock off an inch and maybe an oz.

If limit myself to a compact 2-7 I've only seen one and that's the Leupold VX-1 2-7x28 Rimfire. Might be the leader in the club house but would love to know if there is any optical difference between it and the FX-1.

Anything else I should consider? Or first hand advice on anything I've mentioned?

If your looking for a cheaper shooter, Bushnell Bannor was a good one. 1.5-4 power has been working for me for years.

I went a different route on my Sako Finfire. I took a Leupold FX-3 6x42 and sent the scope back to Leupold for them to reset the Parallax to 50 yds which they will do at N/C. 6x is fairly nice to have and the scope is extremely clear and gathers/transmits light very well. I wouldn't change a thing on mine.

Not really, but I suggest you're on the right track. I would pretty much be looking at the same Weaver and Leupold options for rimfire as you are. As soon as I finish Mrs. Midnight's all purpose M4 this Fall, I'm going to be working up my 10/22 Takedown - just for cost may go Duracote (but am open to Ceracote) and that will include the scope.

From my research, it's fine down to overcast and, maybe, "pre-twilight" - but no illuminated reticle, so true low light performance is probably beyond the product.

Assuming money is no object, I don't think you have a bunch of competing choices. However, I don't think you're going to get much better light collection than the FX-1 beyond the sheer lower magnification.

Once we start doing cost comparisons - I would set the RV-4 as the starting point for comparison. I think you're going to pay well high of that for the Loopys.

I decided to go with the Weaver RV-7. After lots of reading comparing the Leupold Rimfire 2-7 and the RV-7 most everyone says it's a tossup and maybe even a slight edge to the weaver for clarity. $145.xx shipped from Adorama. Good length and weight. Should be here next Tuesday. Will get some pics and comments once I get it.

I've got one of these waiting to go on a 10/22, im excited about it.
Slight hi-jack, any suggestions on rings to go with this on a 10/22?

Leupold Rifleman medium rings were the right size to put the bell of the objective above the rail. Still playing with the scope and comb position. Glass is sharp and clear. Seems bright in the dark house.
