I agree...Colorado is the most frustrating fly fishing in my opinion in the US....it is nearly impossible to stay off of private property and you may well be on public land that is posted to appear as if it is private property. Also LOADS of anecdotes about people's vehicles being damaged in public areas by land owners in the area discouraging fishermen....and they are SERIOUS about trespassing in Colorado....I'd lean toward Idaho but New Mexico is great...

OP lives in Asheville...don’t think Arkansas is what he’s looking for.
Not sure I’d do Colorado though. Montana, Idaho, NM...

OP, why the desire to fly across country when you’ve got decent options so close?
Do you own a drift boat / raft? Get over to the TN tailwaters much? Hit me up..lol

I like the western states because there are so few people per square mile and IMO it is just prettier and more peaceful. The thought of leaving Asheville for 3-4 month a year sounds pretty great too.

Hell yeah if you have the ability to do that, I’d sure as hell do it...good luck.

What do you like to fish in the area? Bought a TN license...at $101 freaking dollars..I’m heading over the mountain as much as possible to get my moneys worth. Much longer drive for me...and wish I had a boat.

I like 2-3 miles on the Tuckeseegee just upstream of Dillsboro, the Davidson River at the hatchery (shoulder to shoulder but it’s great fishing), Avery Creek, and my favorite chill spot is Trace Ridge on the North Mills River.

Cool...don’t get to the Tuck very often but did manage one trip last fall.

The Dirty D is a mainstay for me late fall to Spring because it’s the closest C&R..I have a serious love hate with that river. I had ok luck around the hatchery in the past, but recently I haven’t. And not a fan of rubbing elbows, prefer Horse Cove down..

Actually have never fished Avery. Driven up the road a few times checked it out, but never got the rod out. I’ve always wondered, and maybe you can answer, you ever find any big Browns up there in the fall that swim up out of the D to spawn? I’m sure it happens, just never looked.

Fished the N Mills a few times, but not familiar with Trace Ridge...assuming that’s up the dirt road to the parking spot where you have to hike down a ways? Only been there once but was pretty chill compared to the main parking near the campground.

I’ve got an LSU baw I work with in Charlotte, that has recently just gotten the bug...and he’s ate up with it..lucky single bastard can go whenever he wants.

The allure of fewer people is not a small consideration. I hunted ducks in New Mexico 5 seasons within 30 minutes of the house and killed a lot of birds...and good birds if you like Cans, Pintail and Widgeon...and of course Teal...and in 5 seasons, at least 30 days per season, I saw one other group of hunters twice...and was never checked by the man...not once. All on public land. There are fewer people in Wyoming than there is in the Augusta Georgia Metro Area.....by about 20%.

Having said that the Smokies and Appalachia take no back seat to any mountain range, for beauty, I have experienced...from the rockies to the alps to the sierras none outdo the smokies and appalachia....there is something that calls to the soul of a southerner in Appalachia that no other mountain range in the world speaks to....

A couple budget places that I've been too on multiple occasions are Reliance, TN and Blue Ridge, GA.

They do have some beasts in there though. One time I threw a yellow soft-hackle into the far bank and a monster grabbed it and headed full speed downstream. It reeled off 100+ feet before breaking the tipped. Bastard.

I always fish a 3 weight on Avery. It can be tight. Get mostly small brookies and rainbows.

was going to mention West NC then found out the OP lives there. I have a house in Cashiers....heading there Saturday for who knows how long....not coming back to Houston until my office actually opens up.

Summer is the worst time to fish there but its still fun.

I do a lot of guided trips, but plan to hit up the Davidson by the hatchery , Avery, West Fork of the FB, North Fork of the FB, Caney Fork, and probably the Chattooga.

I agree. That's what makes the Tuck kind of nice since it's a tailwater. Other than the Tuck fishing in the summer is pretty blah. Just another reason I love western fishing. High elevation freestone streams/rivers always fish well. For instance hopper season in Island Park is a blast.

One other place I have always wanted to fish in WNC is Wilson Creek but I have never made it there. I hear it is pretty good fishing. Also have heard that rattlesnakes are a problem in the canyon area. That's the reason I have never gone lol

Alcova, WY on the North Platte might be worth a look.

The kid made it back up for the Yellowstone opener to hang with the Island Park crew. Found this one on a creek in the park. He doesn’t call me right after he catches a fish very often anymore. He did with this one.

Y’all be careful with those summer time water temps on the freestones...they say the water is getting dangerous hot by noon. That’s why I’ve been going to TN.

Wilson Creek...that was my home whitewater river when i paddled.
I’ve never fished the gorge, but that’s hatchery supported water...and it can be a total shitshow in the summer. With people swimming and what not. Last time I drove through there,, the Gorge was “closed” and yellow taped at the access points due to Covid.

Didn’t stop the idiots from just moving upstream.

A few miles up the road is Delayed Harvest water. I have fished that in the past, and had some great days. Didn’t try this year, but sounded like,it had been heavily poached. I’ve about given up on delayed harvest waters cause it’s just so crowded, especially on weekends. If I do hit them up, it’s usually in dead of winter.

Way way up the road, there are a ton of hike in options...including upper Wilson Creek. This is all wild water, and it’s beautiful. Just watch out for snakes and yellowjackets.
I set down my pack one day..bam bam bam, looked down and yellow jackets were popping my leg. Ran off like a crazy person. Was about to just leave my shite there..realized my truck keys were in my pack. Pack was being swarmed by the yellow jackets because I had a Cliff Bar wrapper in there. Finally managed to get it with a long stick.
Painful ride home.
