Also, we're working on one just like what you've got there. That stock sucks so it's good to see you're switching.

Next time we're shooting I'll see if I can get some pics of my dad's 'blue gun'. It's a serious bench rest competition rifle. Makes every other rifle I ever shot seem almost random in accuracy by comparison. Of course it weighs over 25 lbs and if you so much as look at the trigger wrong it goes off. I can probably set that trigger off from here just thinking about it. But he's got a target he shot with it that's about the size of a really tight three shot group in one hole, only it's ten. Absolutely insane accuracy.

Closest I have to a "long range" rifle right now is a Remington 700 270 win. Blueprinted, 24" lilja barrel. McMillan stock, shilen trigger. It sends 130 gr pills down range at about 3000fps. Puts em real close together too. Got some zeiss glass on it, but wish I would have gone night force.

Depends on how much you are willing to do yourself. I don't think you can do better in that price range than a 700 but like I've said before buying a 700 is simply the jumping off point. You've got to mess with the stock and shoot it in to see whether you've got to change barrels or not. The new triggers on them are top notch in my opinion so that's already done. That was half the battle back in the day. And this doesn't even take into account the optics and mounts which are critical and the loads you intend to shoot and the equipment to load them.

As far as out the box accuracy for that price range there are other options that are probably better these days. I've heard good things about the Tikka's and Savages but I can't really tell you from personal experience there. I'm a 700 homer.

I'm talking buy the rifle, take it out the box, mount up some glass, break the barrel in, and start slinging.

Then you'd need to talk to somebody else because I haven't shot many of the new rifles. Only know what I've heard. I'll ask my brother. He's an ex Seal sniper and currently tactical rifle coordinator at the NRA so I suspect he's got more experience with different rifles since all the manufacturers are always crawling all over him to get some love. But he normally defers to the old man on this stuff and the old man loves him some 700s.

The Rem 700 SPS Varmint is pretty good straight out of the box.

You'll end up spending more on optics than the rifle.

Yeah they're fine out the box, but they're nowhere near as accurate as they should be. That stock is atrocious. You can bed it easily enough and that tightens it up a lot, but that fore end flexes if you rest it too far out and touches the barrel.

Even so, it's probably half inch to one inch groups at 100 with just a bedding and cutting it back to float the barrel.

Yes the factory stock is pretty bad on the Varmint. I don't know why they went so cheap but you can easily upgrade the stock for $200 or so and you still have a good rifle for around $800.

Remington 5R.

My gun is in pieces and at the smith as we speak.

Here is my breakdown:
Stiller Tac30 action Left hand
Rock 8 twist 6.5 barrel
R&D removable brake
Manners T3 stock
Timney trigger
CDI DBM with AI mags
Seekins 34mm rings
Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21x w/ G2 reticle.

Chambered in 260 remington and will shoot the 142gr smk.

I should have the barreled action home in a few days, but the stock will be a couple months.

Actually got to shoot one of these on Christmas day. I am seriously considering buying one. Its a Savage .338 Lapua
I have shot a Barret .50 cal and like the Savage .338 better. The .338 ammo is more expensive at around 9 bucks a pop. the .50 cal was around 6 bucks a pop.

Yea, you're definitely gonna have to upgrade that scope to do any legit long range shooting

you obviously don't do any long range shooting. Fixed 10x is plenty to bang gongs at 1,000. The most important thing is consistent clicks.

OP, we have similar taste:

SPS .308
Bell&Carlson stock
Wyatt Outdoors Detachable Bottom Metal
Nikon Buckmaster 4-14x40mm
Badger Bolt Handle

I agree, 10x power is more than enough. I shot a match in Texas last Oct using a 3-12x scope. Never really looked to see what power I was on because I was adjusting on the fly. With the exception of the 3 shots at 1000yds, I found I was on something like 8x most of the time.

Nine bucks a trigger pull would take the fun out of it for me... I bought a Savage 116 300 win mag last week (beast btw) so I'm trying to decide if I want to sell my Tikka 270 WSM and get something like the OP.
