That’s interesting. I listen to these guys daily and hadn’t seen any sweet gum positives. With that said, I’ll keep killing em and just not feel as bad if one escapes death.

“It’s more effective in late growing season when the sap is moving down”
I found this out the hard way with Tallow trees.I found some fair sized Tallow trees on my family property, hacked and squirted with Tordon in July.
It killed the main stem but then probably a dozen new trees sprouted off the roots of each dead stem.
Next time I went after Tallow trees I waited until October and didn’t have the problem of root sprouts.

I find the deer on my property rarely eat sweet gum sprouts. It's very far down on their preference list. I have heard some people report that the deer readily eat it at other locations though. Maybe try cutting some sweet gums down, let them re-sprout, and see what your deer do.

I’ve had similar poor results with hack and squirt on black locust. It just doesn’t work well with that species.

Land agent told me that when you cut down a sweetgum, you need to paint on triclopyr on the freshly cut stump.

Harper mix works really well. I prefer a sharp hatchet like a Fiskars or Eastwing over a drill.
Remember that every Sweetgum you kill next to a road or field edge will fall in the road or field once dead. I prefer to cut and treat the stumps in those situations.

Squirt that Areanal in that hack and watch em die. Been doing it for years.

Tryclopyr (Remedy) is pretty good but Imazapyr (Arsenal) is by far the best, especially for tallows.
Both 50/50 with water. And hack at least 3/4” deep on larger trees.
