Just had the yard leveled with Riversand. I plan on seeding centipede in the near future. My question is do I need to top dress the Riversand with some type of topsoil or will the centipede grow fine in the Riversand? I have read centipede will grow fairly well in sandy soil however I don't mind spending 100 bucks on 50 bags of topsoil if it will make a big difference.

How do you know that you didn't bring in weeds with that river sand? I'm asking because I need to level our yard and it's my fear I'll bring in weeds to my awesome yard.

Centipede will grow fairly well in sandy soil, but I think it will struggle to germinate and establish in a riversand. Centipede sod will do perfectly fine on the sand, but the root system is already established in a good soil. I'm not sure what kind of luck you are going to have trying to seed it.

Either way, you definitely want to mix the seed with Carpet grass seed. About 4 pounds of carpet to one of centipede. Carpet grass germinates in 10-14 days. Centipede takes 45 plus to germinate.

Beware of river silt. Spillway river silt tends to have torpedo grass roots which will make you hate life. River sand is usually dredged when getting gravel out and will rarely have any type of see in it. It comes from deep in the ground. Especially if it's coming from St Helena parish.

How do I know if the "river sand" I'm getting is dredged vs spillway sand?

I'm on the Northshore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but dosent carpet grass have to be cut every 5 days. I hear it looks nice but It is a pain to maintain. Why would you want to mix a high maintenance grass with a low maintenance grass? Will it eventually die off?

Also where does one get carpetgrass?

If you must seed, go with a 1#/1000sqft rate. Do not mix with carpet grass. Wait till mid-March. Probably will need to top dress. In a riversand base it will require a lot of water. Cent takes about 2 weeks to Germinate everyday watering. Sod would be much better and actually cheaper in the long run. Sod and done.

Belle Sod. Order 6 or more pallets and they deliver is how it works I believe. Dont know if river sand was a great idea.

I lay about 300 pallets of sod per month. Sod on sand is no problem. We grade most of our lots with 100 percent sand in the winter because it's to wet to do anything else.

I haven't seeded a yard in years. I have seeded with centipede and carpet grass. Centipede will take over the carpet grass in a year. The below is directly from my sod farm. They grow about 1000 acres per year.

If you plant at the end of February or beginning of March it could take 30 days or more depending on the temperature. If you plant in June or July it could be 2 weeks or less. We just plant the seed.

Riversand

The you already have plenty of bermuda. I imagine the centipede will do fine, but ive never seen riversand without a buttload of bermuda, so you'll have to compete.

ETA - maybe i got river silt.

Buy mason sand. You can get it at Soil and Garden depot or Accardos. Both in Mandeville.

The last time I put mason sand down the sand settled and I was left with small gravel that hindered lawn growth.
