Lake Verret, help a newbie out

I freely admit to being a newborn fisherman.
Now that I got that out of the way, here is my situation. The first/last two times I fished Lake Verrett my buddy and I essentially struck out. We are both non-natives and have solicited help from guys who fish LV regularly.
We are bass fishing using 6' & 7' baitcasters with spinnerbaits and crankbaits of varying color.
After 8 total hours (mornings) of fishing on LV, our only bass was a 2lber I caught with a chartreuse spinnerbait.
We put in at Pierre Bay (off 70) and ride to the eastern side of LV hitting the points around Elm Hall WMA and further South
We cast close to trees and on the shady side
We are sure to hit any downed limbs especially those with green moss
We approach the fishing area slowly with the troll and I have tried several casting styles
Are we fishing the wrong location or using the wrong tactics? (Obvious question but I'd like to hear the answers)
Other than having my wife do it, what are some tips/tricks that will help us be more successful.
Any day on the water is a great day but bringing home dinner would be much more rewarding

Try Grassy Lake, 4- mile bayou area. We been doing pretty good there flipping the trees with jigs and brush hogs.

get some crickets and fish for bream around live cypress trees in the lake and in the crackerhead canal area. used to catch some monsters in there. it's a lot of fun with a fly rod when they are bedding.

I generally fish in the canals south of the lake but not in the lake. Maybe you can get a little info from the links below not in Verret but similar areas and entertaining.

Put the moving baits down and flip. Flip until you're bored out your fricking mind and flip some more. Flip next to a cypress....let it sit and then flip again. Jigs, Texas rigged creature baits and worms. It's summer. The bass are looking for an easy meal

It's been 10 years since we caught big numbers of bass out in the lake itself. The canals running into it are more productive

Grew up in napoleonville and fished LV a lot growing up. Tequila sunrise bass assasin worm Texas rigged was my go to. This time of year we would catch pretty good bouncing chrome and blue rattle traps off the bottom on points in the crackerhead.
