Is it a lot of water right off the hwy or can you walk in a ways with semi dry land with good trees?

sweet! more kayak talk. how do you duck hunt from your kayak? you just lay in it and pop up to shoot? or do you just use it for transportation to get back there and have an actual blind?

Will find out tomorrow I got it for fishing but tomorrow morning I'm going to Big Branch and tomorrow afternoon gunna try out Joyce. I've never hunted at each either and this week was my first time visiting both (for scouting). Also, to the OP: I only tried from the frontage road/HWY you are referring to so there may be better entry points. Anyone know how far the boat ride is from Lee's Landing into the WMA? I'm motor-less and will drag my yak over some grass tomorrow but could be persuaded to use the boat launch if the ride is short from there to the WMA. I plan to sit up in the yak in front of tall grass to conceal the outline of my torso and I have plenty of mesh camo netting to cover me from the waist down, my gear, and the yak (which luckily is tan).

Let us know how you do. Lee Landing is right at the WMA and would be a short paddle in your 'yak. BTW, didn't do much at St. Gabriel this past weekend - DB killed two woodies. Good luck!

If you are hunting tomorrow afternoon for ducks at Joyce you will get busted...

From page 29 of the LADWF Hunting Pamplet...

Walking into Joyce from Hwy 51 is next to impossible. I've taken my pirogue out there a few times off Hwy 51, and even that is tough.

From 51 you will sink to your neck in mud. Tried it before. There is a wooded area with semi dry land past the boardwalk. They also have posted at the 51 sign in station not to pull yaks over the railroad tracks. LAWF does not inforce this, but the railroad does so just be careful. Comes with hefty fine if caught.

What if I go under? There's a small channel by the powerline on the Pontchatoula side of the sign in station. I was planning on dragging the yak under the RR track in my waders and then hopping in to to hunt in the prairie.

Bro that's a hell of a paddle to the prairie. Your best bet is to launch at that launch and drag over into Joyce and just hunt there. You need a surface drive and a trolling motor to get to the prairie.

You're right I just looked at the map. Was referring to the fresh water marsh along the powerline right past the swamp walk. It looks like a good duck place as long as I'm as far from the road as possible, correct?

200 yards from any roadway or person is the law I'm pretty sure, but don't quote me on that. You really see ducks fly all over, but I found towards the back is better. Teal are coming from either the prairie or the lake. I haven't shot too many big ducks out there, but rarely hunt management this late in the season. My buddies hunt Joyce all season long and usually do really well out there.

Lol sorry just read you've never been there. Right past the sign in station there is a dirt road. Take that road and you will see a pink flag. That's where we launch and go across the railroad tracks.(if your in a yak they won't worry about it just the pirogues dragging across) you will see the access. Paddle straight back until you get into the deep marsh. They have a few shallow cuts but you shouldn't have a problem there are a bunch of man made blinds. Mostly just islands where you will grass pushed down. We consider that the back.

ETA: also you can park on that road. Just pull off to the side

is the dirt road on the ponchatoula side of the sign in station or the manchac side? I was near the powerline on the north side of joyce by the swamp walk and never saw a flag, but I was on a little 50 yard road.

eta: thank you so much for all the help
