I want to put a V8 in my 95 wrangler. I’m looking for resources. Considering doing it myself but I wont rule anything out at this point.

i had an '89 that had an LT1 from a Corvette in it. the guy i bought it from did it. used an adapter plate to mount the AX-15 transmission. i assume he had to weld new engine mounts.

i have no other input other than that.

Wranglerforum, wranglertjforum and longhorn84 (youtube). That's mainly for TJs but YJs aren't too dissimilar for swaps.

I was planning a LS and 4l60e from a 2000 silverado but doing a different swap in my jeep now

Care to share any details on the "different swap"?

I landed on a vw tdi swap for my TJ and will use a jeep ax15 transmission.

Currently trying to find a 99-03 vw (alh engine) donor.

That particular generation is relatively simple for diesels (timing belt based, overhead cam, and rotary injection pump fed).

If money weren't an option I would get a Cummins R2.8 crate engine and nv4550 transmission. I don't have $10k to drop on power train only lol

If you're in Baton Rouge or nearby there is a gentleman that lives on Elliot Road that has done several Jeep V8 conversions. He has a small mechanic shop at his house.

There's plenty of Jeep Forums and thousands that have documented these swaps. I build Jeeps, here's your options:

Mopar 360 Magnum mated to your stock trans - sensors and electronics are easy to make work because it's like for like.

SBC with adapter to Jeep trans or a GM trans. Run Carb or Holley Sniper. Easy as can be!

5.3 LS with 4L60E : modify wiring harness to run PCM and TCM

all require engine mounts and/or trans adapters which Advance Adapters makes them all. If not using the Jeep trans, then you'll likely need a custom driveshaft for the trans. Gauges are easy to do with after market and EFI and TCM are easy from the aftermarket these days.

Jeeps are simple with tons of room to work. If you can weld and turn wrenches, you can pull this off with some long weekends a couple buddies

I want to hear more about putting a TDI engine in. I’d take that over the V8 actually

Bayou, I have a 5 L ford v8 thats in a ‘98 explorer. Ive seen a few forums say that’s possible but I’m worried about the transmission. I can do a lot but not weld.

Bruh we’re in the same area. My buddy Randy Jackson has a shop in Covington I’m going to see what he tells me. He might be more motivated if there were two swaps in his future

yeah let me know what he says, i might be interested in that. I've been bouncing the idea around of doing it myself as well, but it's a little intimidating. i've done axle swaps and stuff, but a whole engine and all that electrical is a little out of my comfort level. either way - glad to have a fellow YJer around!

what shop is it?

You will need a donor tdi engine from 99-03 (alh) or 03.5-05 (bew). The newer the engine the more electrical components but also more power. 2006 is the newest engine I've heard of being swapped.

Wiring harness (from vw) will need work to play nice with dash. There's people online who will build and label a new one.

Adapter kit to mate engine to transmission. You can keep the jeep transfer case but will probably want a slip yoke eliminater for a lift kit. That means new drive shafts as well.

There's some work on the fuel system since diesels don't need as much pressure to retrieve fuel from tank.

You'll need new engine mounts as well since the tdi is smaller than whatever gasser was in there.

Here's some thorough tutorials:

Most jeeps produce 150hp and 250+ ft tq and get 30+ mpg. That's assuming you aren't running 40" tires and you get it tuned

The Ford 5.0L is just as easy - you can adapt to the factory trans with an AA adapter. I'm not certain on what trans most run on the Ford swaps. Personally I'd never go through all that trouble and not swap in an automatic (I like rock crawling. EFI is too easy to run on Holley Terminator or Mega Squirt these days. Some people keep the factory ECM's and strip out the wiring harnesses, the aftermarket systems are just a lot cleaner and easier to tune.
